Saints expected to be very interested in former Packers/Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy [McCarthy will interview early next week] (69 Viewers)

Safe pick but McCarthy would be better suited in Chicago than here. Young and talented team that needs good coaching.
how about us? An old and disintegrating roster, no cap space and needs anything that resembles coaching, plus the bar is really low here....

I know a lot of people disagree, but I would not be angry at a Mike McCarthy hire. He has the 3rd most wins with 174 wins (DA had 26) of any active head coach and a .608 winning percentage (DA had .329). He's coached a Super Bowl winning team and knows what that looks like and what it takes to get there. Maybe he's not the best coach in the world, but the best coaches in the world already have jobs. And he just showed enough confidence in himself to not let Jerry Jones bully him into accepting a 1 year deal.

Yeah, I'm not sure what people are expecting. He has a better win percentage over his career than Vrabel who many really wanted and nearly the same career win percentage as Payton, both with one Super Bowl win. And almost all of us would take Payton back if he would come back.

I would like a younger and more innovative coach, but if we are really going to stop "looking beyond the record" then you hire a guy with a .608 career winning percentage. He has his warts, but I don't there is a coach out there that is guaranteed to be better than him and many will be much worse than him. It's somewhat of a safe hire, but when safety is a .608 win percentage it's hard to argue with.

It's not a particularly exciting hire, but he might just be the kind of boring that we need right now. He has a really high floor as a HC.

From the Mike McCarty Wiki page. How quickly people forget his time as our OC. It was Haslett that sucked.

New Orleans Saints

In 2000, McCarthy was hired as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.[21] That year, the Saints achieved a 10–6 regular season record,[22] then won their first playoff game in the franchise's history and finished 10th overall in offense.[23] McCarthy was selected as National Football Conference (NFC) Assistant Coach of the Year by USA Today in 2000.[23]

The Saints failed to make the playoffs over the next three years. In 2002 the Saints led the NFC in scoring, with 49 touchdowns and 432 points, but slowed down at the end of the season. In 2003, the Saints scored 340 points—their eighth highest-scoring season ever. All of McCarthy's four years with the Saints rank in the team's top 10 years for offense.[18]

While McCarthy was with the team, the Saints’ offense set 25 individual and 10 team records. Joe Horn caught 45 touchdowns and 437 passes for 6,289 yards.[18] During McCarthy's time with the team, running backs Ricky Williams and Deuce McCallister both had a 1,000-yard season.[18] In his first two years, running back Ricky Williams would run for 2,245 yards with 14 touchdowns.[24] McCarthy stayed with the team for five seasons through 2004.[23]

He was able to get something out of Aaron Brooks for a short little while there, yes. But overall, he'd have to allay fans' fears of him being too much of a retread. I'm still favoring the young-and-hungry formula, as Payton once was and how Glenn and Brady appear to be now.

Still so many moving pieces in this whole thing, including Kubiak.
He wouldn’t play Jake in the final 3 games of the season when all we needed was to win 1 game of the final 3. Brooks was beat up and throwing backward passes at that point. The whole Dome was booing Brooks. Who was Brooks backup? Jake Delhomme, who would have got us into the playoffs but McCarthy wouldn’t play him. Delhomme leaves at the end of the year and takes Carolina to the Super Bowl the VERY NEXT YEAR! I want no part of McCarthy! Been there done that. Didn’t like him when he was our OC and I don’t want him back. Here is the scary part. I could see Loomis doing something stupid like that. I think the Packers got to the Super Bowl despite McCarthy not because of McCarthy. If Loomis does that it will be another 3 years of mediocrity. The only thing good that will come out of that hire will be Loomis putting the final nail in his own coffin cause he will get fired for hiring McCarthy. I know y’all have not forgot about the years he was here.

Mike Mccarthy coming here would be like Jacksonville hiring Doug Pederson. Mccarthy would mean keeping Carr and trying to compete like we have the last few years but fail. Look at what advances in the playoffs these days, young athletic QB's with a younger innovative OC. Mccarthy's time has come and gone in the NFL.

He's my first choice now. And we can be assured he'll be looked at, considering that Randy Mueler was with the Saints back when Mike was the OC and is again with the Saints. So if they want him, they can get him.

If you're still hung up on Jake Delhomme then you have a lot more issues than Mike McCarthy.

His time has come and gone? The dude has had a 12-5 record 3 of the last 4 years.

You do realize that Haslett was the HC and got to pick the starters, right?

IMHO, those players would have reached those numbers no matter who the OC was. I believe it was McCarthy and not Haslett keeping Delhomme off the field the final 3 games of that season where we only needed to win 1 out of the last 3 to make the playoffs. Haslett was a defensive coach and if McCarthy would’ve told Haslett we need to start Jake, Haslett would have done it in a hiccup.

So you don't think OCs make a difference? And why do you think McCarty made the call to keep starting Brooks when Haslett was the HC?

Sad but true and probably the reason Loomis wants him. It would allow Loomis to keep operating the cap the way he has. McCarthy is a relic and pitiful Head Coach. The Cowboys roster is stacked and he managed to do nothing with it. Yes the Cowboys are generally overrated but an actual decent to good HC could’ve gotten them into the playoffs. Might as well hire train wreck Gruden if this is the direction you are headed.

I wasn’t crazy about Aaron Glenn (the team needs a young offensive minded HC prepared for painful rebuild) but he’d be much, much better than McCarthy. This is exactly what I was afraid of……at least two or three more years of pain and suffering before Mrs. Benson is forced to fire both Loomis and McCarthy.
