Saints expected to be very interested in former Packers/Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy [McCarthy will interview early next week] (78 Viewers)

Hiring McCarthy will have Saints fans longing for the glory days of Dennis Allen’s leadership. McCarthy is well known for skirting personal accountability when things go south

If McCarthy is hired than I believe Carr may stay.

IMHO, those players would have reached those numbers no matter who the OC was. I believe it was McCarthy and not Haslett keeping Delhomme off the field the final 3 games of that season where we only needed to win 1 out of the last 3 to make the playoffs. Haslett was a defensive coach and if McCarthy would’ve told Haslett we need to start Jake, Haslett would have done it in a hiccup.
You don't just bench the QB that got you to 9-4 while you're in the playoff hunt. You certainly don't do it in favor of a guy who only had 2 starts under his belt five years earlier. And you have no evidence either way that it was McCarthy who made that choice.

Yeah, I'm not sure what people are expecting. He has a better win percentage over his career than Vrabel who many really wanted and nearly the same career win percentage as Payton, both with one Super Bowl win. And almost all of us would take Payton back if he would come back.
This. And for those who think McCarthy is not young, that's true, but he is literally the same age (61) as Sean Payton. With more playoff appearances and playoff games, but the exact same .500 record in the playoffs.

Never paid any attention to that but, if so, that's a deal killer for me.

I'm more intrigued by Kingsbury personally. I think he's learned a lot since his first shot in AZ. But I wouldn't hate McCarthy either.
I'm beginning to hear that Kingsbury is a DA when it comes to HC, just on the offensive side.

McCarthy has about five-six seasons left.

Mike Mccarthy coming here would be like Jacksonville hiring Doug Pederson. Mccarthy would mean keeping Carr and trying to compete like we have the last few years but fail. Look at what advances in the playoffs these days, young athletic QB's with a younger innovative OC. Mccarthy's time has come and gone in the NFL.
The same thing was said about Andy Reid before he had a resurgence in KC. He left PHI with a .583 winning percentage, plenty of playoff failures, and his last two seasons there finished 8-8 and then 4-12 before he got run out of town.

The Saints are at a crossroads as a franchise right now. The Payton era raised the bar for the franchise and the fanbase, and changed the perception of the club within the league after being loveable losers for nearly 40 years. As a small-market team, now a handful of years removed from being an annual contender and sought-after FA destination, we are teetering on the brink of heading back down the path to mediocrity or worse. When we hired Sean Payton, we had nothing to lose, and no leverage to attract a proven coach. I would say that we have a lot to lose right now, and far more leverage than we had coming out of the Katrina season. Taking a chance on a young, unproven offensive coach may be an exciting proposition that gives us CSP vibes, but the reality is that those hires flame out far more often than they succeed.

The Saints could do a LOT worse than a proven NFL head coach with a .608 winning percentage, TWELVE playoff appearances with two different franchises, and a Superbowl win. You can point to his playoff failures and question his ceiling, but getting to his floor would be a much-needed boost for the Saints at this point in time, and might just cement the franchise as a winning organization that contends for championships.

Sign me up.

I've heard that he came into AZ and didn't establish things the way he should have and have heard him acknowledge that Dan Quinn has been an influence on how he would do things differently if given another shot. Kingsburry came in straight from college and didn't have NFL head coach mentors beforehand. I think he'd be better the second time.

And he had a playoff appearance in AZ, which is still an upgrade over DA.
