Saints fired OL coach Doug Marrone (3 Viewers)

So I take it Kubiak is officially now the OC of the Saints..

Link??

NW.

Seems like a pretty good sign I would say. Can’t imagine we’d just randomly decide to fire Marrone at this juncture without being nudged by a new guy/system.

No he didn't, he took a decent OL in 21 and turned it into a swiss cheese QB killer in 2 yrs. Same thing he did @ ALA that's why Saban fired him after 1 yr. He had Penning and EVERY player on that OL regressing
Except for Ruiz, he got better under Marrone. And Peat was still Peat, he didn't get worse. Still, that's only 2 players. It was time for him to move on.

And DA made the change 1 season quicker than Payton did.

And here's to hoping that DA gets the same results this season from changing his OC, that Payton got the season after he finally changed his DC for the first time, unless there's a DC I forgot about before Williams.
We didn't have a problem with Gibbs in 2006, it was 07-08 where he had bad seasons before firing him, and 2 bad seasons just now with Marrone before firing him.

He should have been fired the same time Pete was. The OL looked terrible this year. I am pretty happy about this move.

Doug is a grown up. He was moving on anyway. He doesn't want to coach a zone blocking scheme. Kubiac want's his own O line coach. It's football.

I think too many people here forget that aside from acceleration, Penning is essentially a meaner, sneaky athletic Terron Armstead. ;)
I think you guys are weighing to much into scheme changing Penning's prospects. You can't scheme instincts, and Penning hasn't shown any. Perhaps he finds a home on this line, but, Carr's blind side. I don't think so. Do you really want to sell the 2x injured QB you just extended to 2025. That Penning is going to protect your blind side........again.

I think Loomis pulls the trigger on the offensive side of the ball. That seems pretty clear. DA doesn't hire or fire on the offensive side of the ball.

I don't think he's sneaky athletic, it was one of his highest marks going into the draft.

Trevor Penning Scouting Report

When you think of offensive tackle factories, the Northern Iowa Panthers probably aren’t the first football program on the list. But when it’s all said and done in the 2022 NFL Draft, UNI might end up producing more early-round offensive tackles over the past two drafts than programs like Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Oklahoma combined.
The crowning talent behind this accomplishment may ultimately be Penning. Penning is a monstrous behemoth at 6’7″, 325 pounds, and on the field, he’s exactly as imposing as you’d expect. A dominant FCS competitor who’s flashed brightly against Power Five talent, Penning has the tools to ascend. But what makes his game so exciting?

Penning’s athletic profile

Let’s start with the numbers. It bears repeating that Penning is 6’7″, 325 pounds. He has an extremely well-proportioned frame with excellent density and length. That length gives Penning a wide range of impact when blocking in motion. With his smooth, long strides, he can cover a surprising amount of ground in space. Meanwhile, with his size, he has the capacity to lower his pad level, and he also has decent knee bend.
Furthermore, Penning is a great athlete. At the 2022 NFL Combine, he logged a 4.89 40-yard dash, a 28″ vertical, and a 111″ broad. He earned a Relative Athletic Score of 9.96, holds the program squat record at 625 pounds, and power cleans 385 pounds. That athleticism and strength clearly show up on tape.
Penning is a powerful blocker who dominates lighter defenders at the point of attack. He has great upper-body torque and a ton of stored potential energy within his frame. The Northern Iowa OT brings good straight-line burst when moving to the second level, and he’s exceptionally explosive out of his stance. When matching rushers along the edge, Penning is a fairly efficient mover. He’s shown he can flip his hips to match defenders around the edge and wall off the pocket with his frame.
On top of Penning’s athletic traits, he’s also extremely strong. That’s evidenced not only by his weight room numbers but also by his on-field play. Penning has imposing grip strength. He can latch onto players and wrestle them into submission.

Well, this is exciting news tbh. We may do something next season!

This is a clear message to stay the course and was not coined by DA himself, with obvious shortcomings this year why would your head coach feed into the obvious issues on the team, so the media and fans can feel heard?

DA is a head coach, a leader, throwing his people under the bus or to the wolves to satisfy the bloodlust of the media and fanbase is cowardly.

DA like most coaches, held his team down and made the proper adjustments at the appropriate time, that being the off-season.
Agree. It’s amazing how they just don’t get it.

I was wondering when they were going fire Doug Marrone. The Offensive line has been a disaster ever since he was hired as Offensive line coach. Klint Kubiak going need his own coaches anyway to implement his scheme, who he familiar with & can trust. It remains to be seen if Ronald Curry is going be retained as QB coach & Clancy Barone as TE coach.
