Update Saints will interview Mike McCarthy in person during this week, Jan. 20-Jan. 25 [Underhill: McCarthy would have to be the current favorite] (62 Viewers)

It seems like we're in the driving seat with McCarthy. I haven't seen his name connected to any of the other open head coaching jobs.

Agreed…kind of hints to me that “Word is out” about McCarthy’s destination or that his camp has at least put out a lot of “not interested” replies.

There’s no way a coach with his resume wouldn’t at least be getting virtual interview requests with all these openings.

And what all these MM haters are not realizing is that he was under Jones's thumb. From who they drafted to who he could hire as Ast coaches. Heck I'll bet Jones wanted to call plays as well

Definitely. Kellen Moore was forced on MM. And it sounds like Jerry is going to do the same thing with Brian Shottenheimer and the next coach. Assuming Shottenheimer isn’t the next coach. He’s currently the betting favorite…and Cowboys fans aren’t happy about any of their options. They think MM was a better play caller than Kellen Moore so they don’t want Moore either.

Bingo, that is the kicker…these unknown young coaches are merely aspiring to do what McCarthy has done in this league. Why not get the man himself?

Because he's old. He's done it as a younger version of himself, but can he do it now? And for how long before he decides he's had enough.

That assumes he treads water. If the coaching was as bad as we think it was, then a coach with a career 60% winning percentage should more that tread water. He should make you better and build your roster. And if he does retire in 3 or 4 years then you should have a better roster for the next HC. I don't think that's a waste of time.

The truth is that any young unknown guy you hire, you hope that he can replicate the success that McCathy has had. It's not sexy and it's not exciting, but it is the mostly likely hire to result in being back in the playoffs in 2 or 3 years. Which is what you hope from a guy like Brady or Moore.

He's starting over in his 60s. When Payton took over the Broncos he was in his 50s. Plus, he has a superbowl win. I just don't see him being as competitive as Payton to do it again. He's not as hungry as the younger guys. He's not as innovative as the younger guys. Maybe the game hasn't passed him by yet but I don't see him adjusting as quickly as he will need to. Just my opinion, but I don't get the feeling he's still fired up to coach. To me, this simply looks like the chance to get one last big contract based on his history. I think he'll be out of football in about 4 years. And this rebuild will last 2 of them.

The Saints (and every other team for that matter) have had more success hiring a young hungry coach than a retread who's won a championship years ago. Everyone was excited about Ditka too. But if you guys can name a coach who's won a Super Bowl with one team and went on to do it for another, I may change my mind. Very few people have the drive and determination to do what it takes to win a Superbowl. McCarthy has been a good coach, but expecting him to do it again at 61 with a 2 year rebuild ahead of him? Smh, history says the Saints will be back in 3 to 4 years looking at young coaches again. Hopefully they don't hire another retread again

Because young upstart coaches end up winning Super Bowls a lot more often than old coaches that won a Super Bowl 2 teams ago. I know McCarthy's credentials look appealing, but he's no longer in his prime. If he's the hire, I hope he proves me wrong. However, history states that Brady or some other new coach is more likely to lead a team to the Super bowl before McCarthy does.

This board is wild. In one thread, people are mocking the Cowboys for being the only team to not reach the NFC Championship game this millennium, in another people are screaming hire their coach!

Bill Belichick's resume was even better last year. Teams look at history, long term impact. History says this doesn't end well. Teams look at what has worked before.

Look, I've got nothing against McCarthy. I think he's a good coach. But like signing Derek Carr, I don't think it's a long term plan. It just prolongs the inevitable. I was in favor of signing Carr because of where the franchise was at the time. Now? I'd look to the future. I hope I'm wrong because I think McCarthy would have to defecate on the trophy case on Airline Hwy to not get the job.

Because their coach isn’t the problem with that organization.

Andy Reid is 66 and about to win a third straight. Belichick was old as well. Both men on their second teams.

Would you not take Sean Payton as your coach either because he’s 61?

Young coaches fail a lot too. They all do. It’s hard no matter what age you are; there is no perfect formula.

It’s okay to say you prefer a different, younger coach without diminishing the competition with inaccurate statements.

Heck, outside of the one Sean McVay won, almost all of the recent Super Bowl winning head coaches have been older, experienced men.

I really don't understand why people can't see this. There was a time when McCarthy was extremely good. He constantly out coached good (playoff contending) opposing coaches. He hasn't done that in his last 7+ years coaching. It may even be longer but I got tired of looking back. Whenever he goes up against a playoff contending coach he gets out coached, and sometimes embarrassingly so.

Just think of the last 4 years. The Cowboys have been one of the most talented teams in the NFL. The entire nation used to laugh at their losses because the media would also hype them out, and the cowboys would come out and disappoint. It's become such a constant thing that we no longer laugh anymore. Going into this season, we all knew the Cowboys wouldn't make it past the divisional round of the playoffs at best. No one considered them a threat. And when they got embarassed did we all laugh? No. Its become expected. They very often lose big games usually because the opposing coach makes adjustments, and McCarthy ends up getting spanked.

Will we win in the season? Yes. Will we make the playoffs? Usually. Will we contend in the playoffs? Nope. Just like Dennis Allen made us similar to the Raiders, McCarthy will make us similar to the Cowboys.

If your a desperate fan because of the last 3 years, your willing to forego being a Superbowl contender just to be relevant, I get it. But I'd rather swing for the fence in hopes of getting a coach that can out-coach opposition and make it to the SuperBowl.

I'm not a fan of Weaver at all, but he's shown the ability to completely out coach opposition. I would take him over McCarthy.

I'd imagine the reasoning he hasn't done nearly as well as he could have was more related to Jerry Jones than anything else. I mean, Jerry has been the one constant since 2000.

Maybe that continues until Jerry decides to hang it up and sell the team.

Andy Reid had never won a Super bowl before the Chiefs.
Belichick had never won a Super bowl before the Patriots.

That's not the same.

And you're ignoring that one of the people from your example, only got one sniff at head coach last year. Nothing I said was inaccurate. Show me a former Super Bowl winning coach who has rebuilt another team into a Super Bowl winner. I want the Saints to contend for Super Bowls, not be good enough to be competitive.

McCarthy wouldn't be horrible, but I'd prefer the odds if we give a new coach a try. Could it fail? Yes, but at least the Saints will have tried something that has a track record of success versus something that doesn't. And again, hoping that a former Super Bowl winning head coach over the age of 60 gets his third different team to the big game doesn't have a history of success. Young, motivated new coaches does though.

I find it funny that in certain conversations we blame the quarterback for lack of playoff success and in others we blame the coach/organization, depending on what narrative that needs to be pushed.

I’m not willing to put Dallas’ lack of playoff luck all on the shoulders of the head coach.

Bottom line is he created a program capable of consistently getting there, and the whole building needed to dig a little deeper and/or see a bit more matchup and on-field luck.

McCarthy didn’t suddenly forget how to win playoff games.

Super Bowl 57 Andy Reid (64)
Super Bowl 58 Andy Reid (65)

Young Coaches don't win very many Super Bowl's...
Only Gruden & McVay are coaches in their 30's that won the game!
It is a myth...

Your reading comprehension sucks if that's all you got out of my post. How many of those coach's won Super Bowls for their second or third team too? Don't run away Mikey, answer the question. How many?

McCarthy has a full rebuild ahead of him here. Going into his third year here, he'd be 64 with hopefully a better roster. It's not the same as Andy Reid who was still hungry to win and in his 50 when he got to Kansas City.
