Sean Payton is showing how fast you can turn teams around (4 Viewers)

He wasn’t a “better” kicker in 2020, though - statistically the worst of his then five year career up to that point. Then the next two seasons of being hurt and then being unreliable happened. It was a three season stretch of wondering what we actually had with Lutz anymore. Too bad it didn’t work out differently.

If he benefits directly from kicking for Payton, then he’s where he needs to be.

David, you need to go back and look at the stats….Lutz made 82% of his FG’s in 2020…..Grupe’s career % is 82.5…..

That’s after 3 great seasons of 86, 93, and 90….Grupe has yet to approach that level….I agree the injury hindered what would have been really good years, he was peaking before he got hurt…..

Yeah, I agree. It’s why the outburst raised some concern with me. Like you, it doesn’t mean I want a “soft” coach (that’s such a weird observation to me, anyway) but it’s understood that coaching can be a stressful job and that can take a serious toll.

Hopefully it’s not really any kind of big deal but it was alarming to see him completely lose his composure like that. Was it Mike Smith who would get redfaced and have meltdowns?
Mike Smith resembles an old boss I had - said boss, who wasn’t an outburst guy but was prone to rosacea and having more of a passive-aggressive temper, was a lot like watching moderately aggrieved Mike Smith on mute.

I think we’re talking past each other. I’m familiar with his stats and was pointing out that 2020 was already a down year for him (kicking for Payton who apparently inspires greatness out of him - the point somebody made) *before* spending the next TWO seasons out hurt / kicking hurt.

I think people remember Lutz with a fondness that had waned significantly after three seasons of not being the same player he was in his first few years here. Seems like a really good guy and I’m glad his career is back on track.
