Spencer Rattler’s first start was… (1 Viewer)

...better than Caleb Williams' first start.

Rookie starting on an injury-riddled team, #1 wideout gone within minutes of the opening kickoff, producing in a 17-0 hole and then with playcalling that never adjusted to the defensive scheme's exotic blitzing and a defense that laid an all-time egg.

I liked what I saw from Rattler overall. My only problem was where was the adjustment when Bowles starting blitzing him every possession from the last drive in the first half. That was inexcusable!!!!
YES!!! This is the real reason Rattler did not have success in the second half. We were OUT COACHED BIG TIME. No adjustment made when Bowles started that different look.

I think he showed promise in a terrible situation. Made some rookie mistakes, but that’s to be expected.
NO~! I "expect" for his Coaches and Teammates to give him more information and tendencies of his own WRs~! Three long balls to Shaheed under thrown! Seems someone would have told him just to hurl the ball as far as possible and Rasheed will run under it, catch it and SCORE~! Still, seeing AK#41 drop a couple he clearly should have caught? I don't know what to make of this TEAM as a whole~! Once the blitzes came and weren't picked up? That took SR's mind into preoccupied mode with no one scheming to help him..........The entire situation is sad. Rattler throwing to the people he's been practicing with told the tale.....Needs more time on task and let's see.....I'd start Heaner vs Sean's sad arse Broncos just because Jake's thrown to the 1st string players a bit more.....I suppose........It truly is a bad situation. NO FIRE in the souls of what few players we have left~!

Filled w/ teachable moments and confirms he’s a see it throw it QB. Jay Cutler ish, his field vision reminds me of the thin Madden QB cone. He def missed some wide open guys.

I stand by my assessment that he absolutely needs a go to receiver. He’s not really a Point Guard distributor type QB. He plays some hero ball too under pressure and tries to make plays himself. Not in the same manner as Winston, but he gets out of the structure of the offense and tries to escape pocket.

I hate that he doesn’t step up into the pocket, instead preferring to bounce backwards and then escape to the outside. He’s not going to beat many NFL ends to edge.

He’s phone both quick but not fast athletically. Needs someone he can trust to make big plays. Needs a prime ocho cinco type to work w/.

Folks need to remember when we watching. From our couches , we have Birds Eye view , announcers giving us detailed information, can see the defense from a different angle and don’t consider his line of sight when talking rubbish.

I noticed a few times when he supposedly missed a guy , he was rolling out for his life and wouldn’t have seen that window from his perspective.

Some of yall too much

Sorry but most of the time he took off too quickly when he had people open. He looks to scramble/run much too fast. It's what I saw in his collage tape and that will be hard to break since he did it for yrs at SC

I thought Haener would have been the better option going into this game, still think that’s the case—and I’m not a Haener fan. This is an on schedule offense, it’s not made for a guy to be bailing from the pocket trying to make something happen each play. Out of guys like Purdy, Goff, Cousins, Stafford, Tua, etc, where are these Shanahan/McVay-type offenses relying on their QB’s to live outside the pocket in the scramble drill each play? Also, as someone else in the thread pointed out, Rattler doesn’t have exceptional athleticism to run around, if he did he likely wouldn’t have fallen to the 5th round.

One game doesn’t decide Rattler’s future, he may have a lot of promise that gets realized through experience. I think DA made a mistake by not going with the QB that is better built for this offense, and that has an extra year practicing with NFL caliber players. He seems more likely be successful enough to hold things together until Carr returns, even if he isn’t meant to be a long term NFL starter. We averaged 14 yards per drive (on eight drives) after that 70-yard scoring drive, and that was against a much worse defense than the one we will see on Thursday.

It looked clear that Rattler had some chemistry with Means that he did not have with Shaheed. That's going to take time and some reps in practice.
Rattler looked good in first half and confident and decisive on this reads & throws--then pressure dialed up in 2nd half he started looking at the rush (can't blame him-had not time ). Pressure makes all Qbs look bad--Hes a 5th rd rookie, what are you expecting.
I'd take Carr back when healthy, Rattler is your backup

He looked good, IMO. No run game. No Olave. An historically bad defensive performance. And yet they scored 20 points (Sheed got 7 on the return) and did enough to keep it close until the defense just **** the bed. He missed some WRs and left plays on the field. But that’s normal stuff for a rook. He made good plays with his arm and feet and was building a nice connection with Bub. Rattler has a ton of potential
On a positive note--Bub Means looks like he can play-

Rattler doesn't seem to see the entire field. A good QB sees wide open receivers, and he failed to see them 3 times that I noticed. If that can be fixed, he can be a good QB.

I'm not a big Haener fan because he hasn't done anything yet, but I have noticed that he sees the field much better and faster, and finds wide-open receivers. If Rattler can become more accurate and learn to use his 2.5 seconds more wisely and learn to survey the field, he can be a solid QB.

What really counts, though, is what he does this week in learning from the mistakes he made, building on the things he did well, and what adjustments he makes to the way he reads defenses and how he reads what his receivers are doing. The potential of him is about to be shown in the next couple of weeks.
This 100%. Will we see improvement, especially in his ability to see the field? If he does, look out.

My initial reaction is that he better than expected but the OL hampered what could have been, if they just blocked.
