Television recommendations please (1 Viewer)

I'll just add that I have a two year old 40" Samsung LED and I absolutely love it. Amazing picture and I love how it hangs so closely to the wall.

Not sure what trouble you've had with Samsungs, but I've got three other Samsung LCDs that are around four years old and have never had any trouble with them.

Unless things have changed, since 2 years ago I couldn't find a $1,500 LCD that handled the blacks in deep shadow detail like the Samsung Plasma I have now does. I have a nice 32" Sony LCD in the bedroom and the picture although good doesn't quite compare to that of the Samsung Plasma.

And just to add. The gym we go to has like 40 50" Samsung LCD/LED sets hanging all over the place and only one has picture quality problems with 3 vertical across the screen.

I have a 54" Panasonic Plasma in a pretty bright room with lots of windows and love it. My general opinion is that the quality difference between plasma and lcd is so slim now that it really doesn't make a difference for me. YMMV.

I'd just go best bang for your buck among the good TV makers (Samsung, Panasonic, etc) and try to get as big a TV as you can. I'd rather go with a 55" tv in my second favorite technology than a 50" in my favorite technology. But again, that's just me, b/c I'm getting older and my eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I really don't notice the differences that much (LCD looks a little jumpy for sports to me, but that's it), I don't even notice much of a difference between 720p and 1080p at 10 feet on a 55" tv, so take that into account when weighing my opinion.

Costco - Samsung 55" Class 1080p LED HDTV

Based on your requirements, I would pick this one up at Costco if you have one nearby. You could also have it shipped for $99. Costco is just so darn easy to business with. Return in it under 90 days for money back or exchange for something else if you don't like it.

Costco extends the warranty to 2 years at no extra charge. Also, if you purchase with Amex, Amex will add another year to make it 3. (You will need to fax in the receipt or something to Amex, just call them to confirm.)

It's not that difficult. The problem is you're getting absolutely terrible advice from some people who have placed their bets on a horse named "Glue" and they're trying to continue to make him relevant. I've done nauseatingly extensive research on this for years ( purchased 12 TV's in the last 3 years) and have posts on similar threads ( so.......many........similar..........threads) that finding where I stand should be easy. As always though, it's your money, it's your choice. Please research as many sites as possible and be a sponge for info. As long as your decision is informed, you'll feel better about your purchase.

Whether you choose Plasma or LED, bigger is better. Always.

Yep! I just got one of these and it is wonderful!
65" Panasonic VIERA 3D Plasma 1080p 600Hz HDTV - Sam's Club

In fairness, new research will not affect a purchase I make today. And plasmas can offer better or equal performance for hundreds, if not thousands less.

This. Every tv in my house is a Panny plasma, ranging from a 720p 50" '08 model to a '12 model, with the only exception being my Epson projector. The old one was my daily driver in my living room for the better part of 3 years, and is still trucking away perfectly without a hitch, but in my bedroom now. Imo, you just can't beat them concerning the quality, reliability, longevity, and most importantly the price points that will get you all of that. Yes, glare can be a nuisance, but it can be negated with a little common sense, like using shades if necessary. That's a small price to pay to get you a top notch tv, with ridiculous blacks and colors, at a very reasonable price. I'd seriously consider a Panny plasma if I was you, you won't be disappointed. But I'd stay away from any and all plasmas made by othermanufacturers, because that is not their main focus. Panasonic's plasmas are their main focus, and they quite frankly perfected it.

I have an older 2007 46" Samsung LCD and a couple of year old Samsung 50" 1080p plasma. I had some trouble with the LCD panel, it had a power supply issue that was common with that era Samsung panels (took forever to turn to power on after the PS caps blew). I eventually fixed it myself with $8 worth of parts from Radio shack and a $20 soldering iron. The plasma has been flawless, no issues. I also would imagine Samsung has also long since resolved the power supply issues. I love the plasma but it is much better suited in lower light or movie watching situations. It also weighs 80 pounds so that could be an issue. Both have served me well but so has my 32" Sony in my daughters room now.

Pioneer perfected it, Panasonic bought it.
I have a 42" Pioneer Plasma and a 46" Sony Bravia LED and love them both. The Sony had much better pic quality out of the box than anything on the showroom floor. I have been burned a couple of times that I bought a Samsung and they have never looked anything close to what they did on the wall at best buy.

Panasonic better be getting their act together cause very many more 5.5 Billion dollar loses won't keep them in business.
