AMA declares obesity a disease - Los Angeles Times

The American Medical Assn. voted Tuesday to declare obesity a disease, a move that effectively defines 78 million American adults and 12 million children as having a medical condition requiring treatment.

"Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately 1 in 3 Americans," said Dr. Patrice Harris, an AMA board member.

How will it change anything?

Just another excuse for us Americans who struggle with our weight. I'm not huge, but I'm definitely a bit overweight. (5'10", 230lbs). I've managed to lose a good amount of weight through diet and exercise in the past. It's not impossible, I just chose to not exercise and I like to eat. That is a choice I make, not a disease.

I have it

It wont. You see drug addiction or alcoholism changing with all the rehab facilities? Nope. Its just places to send ppl to heal a little then go back out and do it all over again. (though some do recover) Any psychological disease that affects you emtotionally is can only be overcome by that person. Nothing in the world will stop a person from doing what they like to do no matter how destructive it is to them and their environment unless you lock that person up or institutionalize them.

Obesity had 2 forms. One is medically, the other is psychological. Medically, sometimes youre still unable to control it. Psychological obesity, you can control it only if you get your mind right and build yourself up. It takes a lot of will power ect. Most dont have the drive to get there. THye wish in one hand and crap in the other watching one fill up faster.

There was a Dr Oz episode recently that showed how the food industry has us "hooked".

For example, a bag of chips or things like that, have lots of salt.
He had a large container of water (or some other solution) with red dye in it so you could see any action.
He then put in a pinch of normal salt and it bubbled up and you could understand the party your toungue gets when you eat it.
He then put in a pinch of this "Super Salt" that the food companies use and it reacted like a volcano. It was like Mardi Gras in your mouth.

They moved on to the sugary segment and the guest Dr or whatever he was explained how these massive junk food companies have developed over time, formulas that most people find absolutley irresistable. Tons of money, research, trials and test have been and will continue to be thrown at this massive industry.
I do feel like a lab rat, lol.

I know that I don't exercise as much as I used to which contributes to my weight gain, but I will concede that potato chips and sweet pastries are my weakness. Chips I eat daily, the other stuff less frequent.

I believe we literally are "junk food junkies"

BTW, I'm about 25 lbs overweight.

Maybe they will come up with a medicine that makes us all look the same.. Isn't ugliness a disease?
