That game came down to 4 crucial plays.

1) The fumble at our 30
2) 3rd and 2 in the Packers redzone
3) 4th and 1ft at the Packers 2yd line
4) Cobb's kickoff return for a TD

Take away plays 1 and 4 and we win by 6. despite all of the chicken littles on the ssf, I feel like GB pretty much played a perfect game while the Saints were less than perfect. Despite not playing nearly as well as GB, we still had an opportunity to tie the game on the last play.

The defense will get better as the year progresses, and the offense seems to be ready to roll. If we go 13-3 this year, I see us with HFA throughout the playoffs, and hosting GB in the Dome for the NFC title.

i can finally agree with daparishbrah!!!!

Just a casual observation, but Mike Mcarthy is a slightly better play caller than Sean Payton. He's got all the awesome stuff without the goofiness that Payton displays on the most crucial plays.

When it comes to a critical, game-on-the-line, do or die 4th and 3 or whatever, Payton is always like a guy playing Paper Rock Scissors thinking too many moves ahead. He's the guy who after a tie on scissors is thinking: "he knows I just went scissors. He's expecting me to think he's going scissors again, which means he thinks I'll go rock, so he'll go paper. So I'll go scissors!!!!". Meanwhile the other dude is just going rock.

I'm quite certain Payton looks at gamefilm all the time and complains that other people are too stupid to trick.

It makes sense that there is a chance MM is a better play caller than Payton. I mean, MM did actually make Aaron Brroks look like a good qb for a few years. THAT is amazing.

All jokes aside, I'm not that sure MM is that much better than SP. MM is blessed with wr's that can go the distance. Our wr's are just not anywhere close to being as good as GB's. They don't catch as well and they are stiff and lumbering by comparison. And even our fast wr's like Meachum and Devery don't seem to "handle" nearly as well out of the breaks. Especially Meachum, he's like a nervous little dog that sometimes just "spazzes" out when trying to run. I'm not sure what is up with that.

I think sometimes Payton had to take chances MM didn't have to take. He has to be a lot more creative due to the lack of yack our wr's can generate compared to GB's. Our offensive line is also EXTREMELY "unclutch" and not very good at run blocking, they seem to only be good at run blocking when the other team has no idea what we are gonna do. Three things became apparent to me while watching that game.

1) Green Bay has one of the best collection of wr's to ever play together in the NFL.

2) Drew Brees with Green Bay's wr's would be even more sick than Aaron Rogers, because Drew is a better qb than Rogers.

3)I don't trust our interior line at all for run blocking when the other team knows we are running. It's like SP has to keep the opponent guessing at all times(and due to that, he can get too cute), because if the other team knows a run is coming, we get blasted!

I would rather have 3rd and 5 yards(where we are forced to pass) to go than 3rd and 1. And I've been thinking this way for years. sigh

I think playcalling, or tipping your hand, or scheming, or creating advantages, makes a huge difference in o-line play.

This was always my beef with Carl Smith. There was never any misdirection or threat of being tricked presented to the defense. People in the NFL are too good to just telegraph what you're doing.

While I don't disagree that our o-line often looks incapable, I think we would have had a much better chance to convert those short yardage plays against GB if we had made them respect more threats.

I think teams are relieved when we go to heavy formations - we are essentially taking weapons off the field. 4th and 1 should be scary for them. With Brees' accuracy, we should keep the field spread a bit. If they stack the box, brees can easily hit a short little hook or slant. If they play it honest, our guards should be able to get enough push for a one yard gain. Why make it easier for the defenses?

But, I'm not Payton, and he's actually a football coach.

I mostly agree with Sack on this issue, but I do agree that McCarthy was the better play caller on Thursday night. Who is the better play caller overall, I don't really know. But, all of the things you give credit to McCarty for are things Payton does too. But, since the rash of running back injuries and our lack of a great WR, he is a bit handicapped in his play calling.

As far as Thursday, both 4th down calls were questionable. The first one, he telegraphed the play action when he brought in Thomas and with the formation on the second one he telegraphed it by putting in Ingram and with the formation. That being said, Payton has new toys to play with this year in Graham, Ingram and Sproles, with little time to work with them because of the lock out, so it is going to take some time for him to get some rhythm with using them correctly. In addition, I'm not sure he yet trust Ingram to pass block for Brees on a play action near the goal line. Of course, as it turned out, the line got blown up anyway. And, yes, part of that is because they knew we were passing, but the line still has issues and they should have done better than that even if GB knew exactly what we were doing.

We really need to see meachem step up this year. Coslton is hurt, but even when healthy he is more of a possession receiver than a true #1 usually is, and although drew threw for a ton of yards, there were times when I felt the receivers did a less than stellar job of getting open on thursday.

As for the defensive side of the ball what we need more than anything on this entire team is an elite pass rusher. Coverage problems seem to almost disappear if you have players capable of putting pressure on the QB without having to blitz every down to create pressure.

Definitely a good decision for them to send all of those draft picks for a WR when Matty doesn't ever throw a ball past 10 yards.

their o-line is getting shredded. it's great! why they decided to pass on the two point conversion, well it just don't make no sense.

Their oline is making the bears' oline look good. Still hate rooting for Cutler, though. It just makes me feel gross.
