Things That Make You Feel Old (12 Viewers)

So I jog 5-7 miles every morning before work and on weekends. When we lived in Louisiana, it was easier because we didn’t really have seasons, so unless it was storming outside, the weather was ideal. Here in Ohio, when we get decent snowfall and sub 20 degree temps like this week, well, me busting my arse on icy sidewalks or streets isn’t ideal, so I sometimes do my running on the indoor track at the local Y. Anyway, I’m running this morning and there are a couple of more mature gentlemen walking on the track, so of course I’m lapping them. Suddenly, I caught a freakin Charley horse that almost knocked me on my arse. I played it off and started walking awkwardly. So the two older gentlemen caught up with me and asked me why I stopped running. I said, “I just wanted to join the conversation.” So we proceeded to walk and talk about hemorrhoid flare ups and big toe gout. :covri: Lovely discussion fellas, thank you.
When I used to be a runner in my late 20's/early 30's & was doing marathons, 25K, fun runs, you name it....there was nothing more humbling than an octogenarian passing you by ....or a 10 year old! Back then I was doing 8.5 minute miles. I don't run anymore but I'd bet I'm at at least 12 minute mile now because of age, being out of practice, knee surgeries and the fact that I focus more on lifting now. I wonder if I could even run a single mile without stopping. LOL

Well, I am not the running machine I once was but I am way stronger now and have a lot more muscle - which is really important for women as we age. Most elderly women are in nursing homes either due to loss of mental faculties or from an inability to move, directly related to loss of estrogen. I am definitely prioritizing muscle over cardio. I still do cardio, just not running (stairs or bike) & for much shorter amount of time.

yeah my mom works out more than she ever did

That's good. My mom is still totally mobile and 'active' but she doesn't work out. I'm always trying to push her to at least walk 2-3 miles every single day and get to the gym but she doesn't prioritize it. Seems crazy to me because her mom was very overweight and immobile in her old age & she doesn't want to turn into her.

I admire runners - I am not nor have I ever been one. I’ve never run any marathons or anything serious outside of a few charity/community events. For me, it has only been about health and keeping weight off.
It took me a long time to build up to where I am now. With your focus on muscle strength, I’d bet it wouldn’t take you long to back in the swing of things when it comes to running.

Maybe. I no longer have the desire to run anymore. I prefer long walks, biking or hiking. Sometimes I feel nostalgic and think about it for about 60 seconds then I'm like "nah". I made some of my best friends through running/training for marathons. Friendships that have lasted decades. None of us run anymore LOL. One of my friends used to even do Iron Mans after graduating from marathons.

Not sure I ever would have been a fan, but wrestling stamped out any possible affection I ever could have had for running
I’d rather bike 100 miles than run 1
