This team has 2 serious problems - and a few other observations (1 Viewer)

This factually could not be more wrong.

Penning immediately loses the leverage battle and gets bench pressed back onto his heels.

At this point the defender has complete leverage and can disengage inside or out. The play was completely ruined because Penning was beat.

You can try to argue the reciever is designed to cut inside (absolutely not) but even if that was the case Penning had ZERO inside leverage.

Sorry but I disagree, while TP could have held a bit firmer the play was designed for him to turn him inside and Means to take it to the outside. Just look at how the other blocker were turning their man inside. Don't want to take my word for it? Duece McAllister said the very same thing in the radio broadcast. I kind of think he knows more than both of us put together. And Penning's reaction is that "hey you were supposed to turn that to the outside" Even some of the responses on X know it was meant to go outside LOL

Why don’t you try a little harder next time to be a jerk on your replies. I don’t think you quite pulled it off. And I do thank you for so eloquently correcting me that it was a wide receiver and not a running back that ran the play that got destroyed by Penning. So sorry I have an opinion. Didn’t mean to ruffle your feathers. Don’t break your neck shaking your head so much. At least I’m in the majority.
Well , just like Jim Mora said , " You think you know but you don't know and you never will" People spout off opinions as FACTS, when they are completely wrong and wrongfully malign a player that was not in the wrong. That error needs to be pointed out. TP has a lot of work to do and has had some issues, that play was not one of them. Sorry you took offense at me pointing out your error

I would put that more on the runner than the blocker. Reaching a wide 9 without giving up any ground to gain the leverage you want is tough. Penning gets the leverage he needs but gives a little depth to do it. Is it possible to do better there? Yes, I think so, but I think it's acceptable.

Means starting angling upfield too early and then hesitated. He should have stayed flatter initially, and continued to work to the sideline where the space was being created. Penning was the pivot on the gate.

We have no WRs. We only have Chris. Shaheed is hurt. I don’t trust anyone else in a real game. DA failed this team not getting another WR.
DA failed there but what he did do, and as much as we dog him, to his credit he built a lights out defense. We just have to be semi-competent on offense and we can win games.

I am excited to see the full defense on display in a couple of weeks with Latt in back out on the field.

As for receivers we are running a different system now we are asking those guys to block more so maybe we have the right guys let’s see it play out besides it’s late in the game to change anything we are gonna have to roll with what we have

The o-line is the first. Penning is so-so, but not the answer at right tackle. I keyed on him and he still gives up the inside move every time. But, he’s not the only problem. Most of the backup players are not any better. Hergel, ogbah, and young are about the only players who can play. If we don’t pick up some better talent from other teams, we are in trouble.

WR is the second. Beyond Olave, shaheed, Wilson and Perry we are hurting. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many drops in a game. Now, st brown looked pretty good for the most part, but not as a player who should get a lot of playing time. I really like Samson Nacua, but they didn’t really give him a great chance to show much. Means ain’t ready to play. Tipton has an injury so we don’t know what he can do in a game.

It was good seeing dowell back, but lb depth is too strong for him to come back. Mike rose is a guy who should be on the practice squad. He could be next year’s alike Hudson.

I’m torn between Rico Payton and Shemar Jean Charles for the last cb spot, but I lean to Payton.

Jacobson just played his way off the practice squad. That was an awful performance. I like Fairchild as a practice squad player in his place.

Kibodi will be picked up by another team on waivers. He makes too many plays, and is hard to bring down.

Losing Justin Simmons is going to come back to haunt us. We don’t have a starting ss on this team.

The o-line is going to keep this team down all year. I hate to say this, but I wish we still had Andrus Peat on the team.
I agree with the safety position. I feel like Tyrann Mathieu is washed up. Also, Landon Young got exposed this game.

Smdh. The op should remember that this Kubiak system is a run first, motion heavy operation. We don't have to have great wide receivers to scheme up lanes for our guys to get open. If Derek Carr does his job we'll have more than enough playmakers to be involved moving the ball. Ya'll got to remember that Taysom, Alvin & Juwan will be involved way more than a 4th or 5th receiver....

1. Oline - critical condition - No starting tackles out there right now. We might get a back-up tackle that is cut but you don't see starters getting cut at this position. Shame on us for not putting more emphasis on this in the draft. McKinstry could be a good player but another tackle should have been taken.
If only we could've seen this coming. If only there was some way we could've known that relying on Penning at RT and a rookie LT was risky. Had they known then maybe they could've done something to prevent it. Maybe they could've said, "Does anyone else notice we don't currently have reliable starting Tackles? Is that something we should look in to? Having Tackles is kind of important." If only...

In what world does it make sense to go into the season with a retired starting RT, a failed LT starting at RT, and a rookie LT? You say they should've drafted another Tackle instead of Kool Aid. I say it shouldn't have even come to that. They should've had a handle on the position before the draft. It's baffling to me how they have handled the position the past few years. This didn't just sneak up on them. I love the Saints but it's frustrating how they ignore glaring issues until it's too late.

Even if the play was designed to turn inside Penning failed to establish inside leverage at all. He doesn't fire across the ball to get inside his defender whatsoever.

He lost so bad to the point the defender won the leverage battle with both arms extended to disengage.

Also take a look at the bottom of the screen and you'll see our TE and WR double the defender in the attempt to secure the edge. Why would they be attempting to secure the edge if this is a designed inside run?

Inside or outside doesn't matter Penning got completely destroyed.

The Saints problems begin and end with the offensive line. Unfortunately, it's going to take another offseason to really fix.

There wasn't a single viable option in FA and they spent their first rd pick on an OL. As the saying goes, it is what it is....

The WR group certainly isn't complete but given that Payton left this team with no WRs other than the ghost of MT, they have done a decent job building an average group with some upside to become a good group, in only 3 years.

Penning was driven back two yards on that play, it's why Means ran into him. Even if Means goes around Penning look at the other blocks. They don't seem to be open but it is hard to assume Means can't bust it open. Just a bad play all around and that is why we have preseason

Would have loved to land Simmons and really no depth here. But I believe in Johnathan Abram
