TIL: Today I Learned... (7 Viewers)

TIL that the United States original 13 colonies included…. North Carolina, South Carolina and freaking Georgia….. or more likely, like a lot of stuff in my life lately- i actually knew it 40 years ago but just forgot in the intervening decades .
And did not include Florida

I didn't learn this today, but i just realized this. Handicap bathroom stalls aren't handicap only. They are just handicap accessible. meaning, if you need one, and someone is in there, you have to wait like everyone else.. They are not like handicapped parking spaces. AITA?

Did you ever whup up on one of your students in a dance-off to keep him/her in school??
quite the opposite, unfortunately
Student: I want to quit and join the circus
Me: You're only young once
Their Parents: are you going to finance this?
Me: Do you mean spiritually?

it's actually an interesting question
quite often there are more than enough parking spots, it just requires a bit more walking
but sometimes there's only one additional stall with the handicap stall - if there are 2 non-handicap people and only one non-handicap stall, should they wait?

Ive never really thought about it.. mainly b/c as Guido mentioned there arent usually many options.. but also because, generally speaking, handicapped accessible bathroom stalls dont have the blue signage that handi parking spots have, or the physical sign that says ‘It’s illegal to park ur arse here’ or whatever .

But there is always that somewhat guilty feeling of using a handicapped stall. You always have that "what if a handicap person comes in then i look like an ahole." But honestly, we shouldn't feel that way. Because when you gotta go, you gotta go and no point in peeing or sharting yuor pants because you feel guilty about the handicap stall.. i mean, i doubt anyone even thinks twice about using it, but its always in the back of yuor mind while using it..

"No room to swing a cat" means that there is very little space. This phrase is thought to have originated from the punishment of flogging, which was done on board ships. The "cat", or cat 'o nine tails, referred to a whip made of nine knotted ropes and was swung over the heads of sailors to discipline them. Below the deck of a cramped ship, there would be no room to swing the cat, hence the phrase.

To "turn a blind eye" means to ignore or pretend not to see something. This phrase comes from the story of British Admiral Horatio Nelson during the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, where he reportedly pretended not to see a flagship's signal to retreat by putting his glass eye to his telescope.

Apropos of nothing, Thomas Truxtun, the Captain of the frigate Constellation hated convoy escort duty because merchant vessels tended to be much looser than the tight ship Truxtun ran abord the Constellation. While on escort duty in the Caribbean one ship continued to fall out of line. Truxtun signaled to her "If you do not learn to better handle your Ship and Follow our Motions, I shall fire into you"

Today i learned, and im not making this up- that there was a planned sequel to Forrest Gump (not just someone’s pie in the sky idea, but apparently got pretty far into development)- where , amongst other improbabilities , Forrest finds himself during the infamous freeway chase, in the BACKSEAT OF OJ’S BRONCO… that’s a true story .. tagging @guidomerkinsrules since id be interested in his thoughts once he returns from Lent in a month and a half from now .
