Training camp practice updates 8-25-23 (1 Viewer)

I like Lutz, l really do, but you have to go with the kicker who shows the best form in preseason and training camp
Of course it would be a big risk to cut or trade him but could also be a bigger risk keeping him
I disagree you can’t select a kicker based off one off-season when luts has shown multiple years of being elite. Not saying the rookie couldn’t be great either but j wouldn’t take the risk off one off season.

We did the same thing with Hocker and lived to regret it.

You can go with an unknown like Grupe. But you have to live with the downsides. We have no idea how Grupe handles the bright lights or the pressure kicks. We also don't know if he has the mental toughness to get through a slump.

The biggest issues for kickers is their ability to manage and navigate their confidence when they're in a slump. Some guys never regain their confidence and some guys are never the same again once they hit that wall.

Look at Gillikan for example. He had a monster 2021 and we thought he was going to be better than Morestead but came back down to earth a bit last season. Consistency is hard to find and it's impossible to gauge in a practice/preseason setting. When you find it, you hold on to it.

Plus, we don’t even know if Security will let him in the building on Gameday!

Exactly why I’m sticking with lutz

I've seen the kicking carousel before go around before we got Lutz and let go of a good kicker in Dustin Hopkins. Then I saw it again when Lutz had the core injury and was out for the whole season. Yeah he had a down year last season. but it may have been because he was still healing up from his injury. I'll stick with Lutz

But maybe we kinda do.

In preseason game 1, to win the game, with no timeouts and the clock running, he got on the field, got set, and drilled a 31-yarder.

Yes it was short, and yes it was preseason, but that's about as good of an indicator as you can get for a rookie in preseason, and the kid looked poised.

What about during the regular season when there's 5 seconds or less and it's 50+ yds. at the end of the game for the win and there's more pressure, can he do it. We already know that Lutz has done it quite a few times.

I think this is what he was trying to say...

You'll know if we are for real or not week 1. If Carr throws interceptions, and our defense can't pick the ball off, then it was just bad offense in practice. Not good defense.
The thread was mainly training camp tweet. I don't know what he is referencing his comment to.
