Given the last couple years, how can you 100% say Lutz is still that guy? What about during the regular season when there's 5 seconds or less and it's 50+ yds. at the end of the game for the win and there's more pressure, can he do it. We already know that Lutz has done it quite a few times.
The thing I take in consideration with Grupe is his exceptionally small frame. If he takes a hard hit tackling, getting tackled, or getting blocked, what are the chances he gets injured?Given the last couple years, how can you 100% say Lutz is still that guy?
Lutz was once as unproven as Grupe. Now, he's looking at stiff competition. I don't think that is an accident which really means the coaches see a way to improve.
We'll know their decision soon and can second guess it for years after that.
Yeah, Lutz was unproven at one time. But when we signed Lutz it was because we let a real good kicker in Dustin Hopkins go for a rookie kicker, I think his last name was Hocker, that looked good in the preseason and then couldn't hit the broad side of a barn during the season and then the kicker carousel started. Lutz was a need back then. Grupe is not a need today. Let's not make that same mistake again of letting a really good kicker be released or be traded away again.Given the last couple years, how can you 100% say Lutz is still that guy?

So because years ago, it didn't work out we should never consider doing it again? Seems to me that's how you miss on players like M Colston, P Thomas, S knight etc.Yeah, Lutz was unproven at one time. He's a kicker. All he has to do is get in the way. If you give up 1 or 2 returns over the course of the decades he can play because he's not a safety, I think you live with it. The upside is worth it.The thing I take in consideration with Grupe is his exceptionally small frame. To me, the decision comes down to weighing the odds that Lutz misses more kicks than Grupe vs the odds that Grupe gets injured taking a hard hit at some point during the season.
Trade Lutz and TQS for a 2nd rounder to Denver and call it doneTrade Lutz to Denver and get this over with... If Shaq and AT both don't make the team over Mr Invisible (TQS) and Kirkwood... I am gonna lose it.
You don't do it again because there's no need for it. You go with the known commodity who's done it before rather than someone that looks good from short to mid-range. Lutz was nailing kicks from 60 and 61 yds. In camp. Can Grupe hit from that far in a must win game with time running out? No one knows and we don't want to have to find out, especially when you already have a kicker that can do it.So because years ago, it didn't work out we should never consider doing it again? Lolll been saying this for yearsFrom the left hash mark he is $, due to his right to left kicks. He seems to almost at the goal post, and it naturally hooks a little. When he kicks from the right side, I usually go to the bathroom!
One thing in my mind is this: how consistent was Lutz last year? I may not be remembering correctly but I recall him missing some pretty easy FGs. I don’t think he’s been as automatic as he was prior to injury. Likely the concern of the team as well and why Grupe is in here fighting for a spot.Given the last couple years, how can you 100% say Lutz is still that guy?

Not at practice. Human nature, you take more chances during practice
He already said last year he was in his head a lot because of the year prior injury. He said he was good nowOne thing in my mind is this: how consistent was Lutz last year? This one is tough. It’s almost a gut call they probably pretty even in practice. You go with the guy who was once automatic even from the 50, or you go with the young new kid that is hungry to make a name.
Glad I don’t have to make that call!
We must be pretty good this year, we're talking about kickers!!He already said last year he was in his head a lot because of the year prior injury. He said he was good now
