Triplett says Saints Interest in Chris "Beanie" Wells is "Bona Fide" (1 Viewer)

It could be argued that we needed WR, CB, and OL at the times that we selected all of those players. It's really easy to sit back now and say those weren't wise moves. But I think Payton is usually spot on about what positions we need to upgrade and when we need to do it.

it could be argued that we needed to upgrade those positions. it could also be argued that those were not good draft selections. i agree Loomis and Payton have a pretty good track record in the draft, but they arent infallible by any means. I dont think selecting Wells at 14 is the right decision, and if that puts me in disagreement with the coaching staff than so be it. However i think its unlikely they will select Wells at 14 anyway.

Are you retreating? What is the new development? My guess is the Rashad Jennings meeting.

No retreat. But trying to verify some info.

Under "innovative stats." That is not even a real stat, but some subjective stat dreamed up by a website. I think I would trust Payton more than that site. Thomas got stuffed multiple times on 3rd and short and goaline. Whether that was his fault or the line can be debated.

I think the bottom line is if the Saints feel they need Wells, they will take him regardless of what fans think about the situation or Pierre Thomas.

Malcolm Jenkins / Sean Smith are >>>>>>> Derek Pegues

Clay Matthews / Conner Barwin >>>>>>>>>> Zack Follett

Is Beanie Wells that much more impressive than a guy like Andre Moore or Rashad Jennings? If you really think he is, how would he fit in Sean Payton's offense which revolves around Drew Brees and the passing game?

We need to stop ignoring defense. We are a mediocre franchise until we get it right. Gregg Williams is a great first step. Now we need to give him some more to work with.

Wells is that much more impressive than Brown (not Moore) and Jennings. Also, Brown and Jennings WILL NOT be there in the fourth round. You might want to use names like Arian Foster or PJ Hill.

Well what you think the team needs and what Payton thinks the team needs may not coincide with each other. Whatever he selects would be in the team's best interests because he knows what we need more than anyone.

what a buzzkill! I mean what is the point of this board if we have to agree lockstep with the coaching staff on every single issue?

Maybe our offense really revolved around Deuce and his ability to run the ball. That was the last time we were in the playoffs. Just a thought.

if that was the case we would have been in the playoffs when deuce was in his prime, but we lacked a defense then also. our defense was decent in 2006. it got worse the last two years.

i think that can mostly be attributed to these two guys. check out the sack totals for our starting DE:

Charles Grant
2006 - 6
2007 - 2.5
2008 - 3

Will Smith
2006 - 10.5
2007 - 7
2008 - 3

both Grant and Smith had more sacks in the 06 season than they did in 07 + 08 combined. DE production has significantly declined the last couple years.

also, david played terribly in 2007 and wasnt helped out much by the safeties or the line.

to say that deuce was the main reason we made the playoffs in 2006 is just slightly absurd.

Maybe your reading into it too much. It was just a thought. I'm not trying to give our defense any credit for the past two years. I was more aiming at the fact that he said the offensive revolved around Brees and the passing game. Now your really going to call me absurd. lol

Lets put it this way. Our entire team revolved around the play of Deuce.

Certainly not because I don't agree with everything Payton does, but I am Paytonized (LOL) which is to say I try to look at everything he does with an open mind. I certainly don't speak in terms of absolutes and extremes like I see so often on here; "There 'no way' we should select ______ under any circumstances," or "If we select _____ we will fail." I think to talk like that is silly. No one single move Payton and Loomis could do would be that detrimental to this team.

I would not argue that the offense revolved around Deuce. However, your suggestion here is a little off too since Deuce's prime years came under the direction of a different regime that had a host of problems including inconsistent play-calling and play from the QB position. We had talent but a lot of immaturity. I like Aaron Brooks. He's a friend, good guy. But he regressed over the years and that did as much to hurt our opportunities than poor play on the defensive side of the ball. Deuce helped us finish games. Pierre Thomas has the ability but you have to be honest about his ability to shoulder the load game in, game out.

Maybe it is not either/or but both/and. The defense played better, but the defense was fresher in 2006 than the last two years when we failed to have a solid, consistent rushing attack.

Jason David did play poorly in 2007. But let's not forget the reason why David was brought here in the first place. Fred Thomas played poorly as well and so I think it is a tad shortsighte to assume that the defense was the only reason we did not succeed the last two years. Obviously, the offense has been light years ahead of the defense and so there are legitimate concerns about our defense. At the same time, that does not mean that we ignore the need for a replacement to Deuce.

Anyway, we will see what happens.

Pierre Thomas had one of the best success rates in the league for picking up first down. try again.

so obviously deuce isnt good on 3rd/4th and short since he failed to convert and also fumbled on a key drive at the end of the game against the panthers a few years ago.

Beanie Wells is a smokescreen. There is no way that Payton, who has been very Parcells-ian in how he plays with the media, is vocally expressing this much interest in a player when there are 13 teams picking before him, and 18 behind that could trade up.

Which part, the part where the refs didn't call an obvious offsides by the blitzing linebacker that tackles PT right after he gets the ball on 4th and 1?

as far as we know he could be using that as motivation for PT and Bush.
