***TROPICAL ALERT*** TROPICAL STORM ETA (Late season tropical outlook discussion) (3 Viewers)

We got solar panels on our house in 2015. They’ve been a big help to and have kept our energy bills low.

One thing that the rep told us was that in the event of a major power outage, the home could be set to run only on solar power.

Does anyone here in the NOLA area (or anywhere else, I guess) know anything about that?

If it helps, solar company is Posigen. Our home is near Gretna.

My parents in Barataria got power back tonight.

I can’t help but think that by 2020 standards, the SE Louisiana power grid is under-engineered. It’s hard for me to imagine that what’s in place is the best possible mousetrap that can possibly be built.

A power grid can be made much more resistant to wind, can’t it? From an engineering standpoint, I mean. I’m sure the biggest constraint is money rather than technology.

Would it make sense for Entergy to maybe offer bare-bones home generators to their customers? Maybe build the cost into the billing over a period of time? I guess a lot of people would refuse to take on higher rates, though.

You can’t use panels to power your home in an outage unless you invest in some sort of battery setup (which is expensive and takes a certain amount of maintenance).

The problem is that you risk back feeding the grid when the power is out so there is a cutofff where the panels hit your meter so that doesn’t happen.

Just for fun, the GFS has another cane in the gulf next week.
That GFS model looks crazy as time goes on.... clearly too far out to take seriously.

However...

And the Euro is showing it slamming into Central America.

Same system that GFS brings into Gulf. I agree though, way too soon.

Everytime my family/friends come over from Sweden, they mention how our power lines look like a movie scene from the 50s. I love living here, but it’s definitely not due to our “amazing” infrastructure. Slightly off topic, but I moved to the States in the late 90s and I didn’t know anything about writing checks. They don’t exist in the rest of the Western world!

At least we party much better than them!

Got our power back yesterday around 2:00 right before I got home from work . Picayune.
Least I got to see the falcons almost choke another lead at the end.
