The tactical aircraft they currently use are modified military aircraft. CalFire uses a fleet of old Navy folding wing submarine warfare aircraft which date back to WWII. Many other of the larger tanker fleet used to be military aircraft as well. Some are modified modern jet airliners too.Would it though? Amongst other issues, pilots and technicians would have to retrain on them, I imagine military planes are a totally different beast than civilian versions. And its not just the airframe, its the engine, avionics, etc. So the TCO could quickly add up.
The fleet California uses of the navy aircraft were rebuilt a few years back. They rebuilt them to a level that they were considered to be new aircraft despite being something like 80 years old.
