Underhill: I think everyone involved knows Carr cannot play this year at his current salary (29 Viewers)

It works the other way is well.....just because CKM (thanks for the name thread) states publicly months before TC that he likes Carr only means that right now there doesn't appear to be a chance that he won't be the starting QB in 2025.......But, sometimes things change....

I'm actually ok either way, but I want an open QB competition in TC, that all hinges on if CKM sees Rattler as legit competition for Carr at this point.....impossible to know until TC starts or they address it in a PC.....

I would be the most shocked/happiest person on the forum is Carr took an actual pay cut as in not simply shifting money around or converting bonuses. Like actual shaving millions of dollars off of his contract/cap number, I’ll be the first one to pleasantly say I was wrong.

If Carr is on the roster you’re not seeing an open competition at starting QB lol #2 for sure. Other than that don’t hold your breath.

Maybe not, it's something I'm hopeful for (like Rattler shows KM enough to be a contender) but not zero summed about.....it's likely that KM sees Rattler as not ready for prime time right now....that's fine....

There is exactly one reason Carr will agree to a contract that pays him less this year, and that’s if the alternative (cutting him) would likely result in him making less money in the long term. That’s how negotiations work.

He’s not taking a pay cut to help the team’s cap space. He can be restructured (aka kick the can down the road) if the goal is only to reduce his cap hit this year.

That is exactly what Underhill said on his podcast yesterday. He thinks Carr is going to have to take a pay cut. That while Carr does have some leverage because of the teams finances, the amount of teams that need QBs and the particular QBs that will be available will make it very difficult for Carr to make even what he would after a pay cut. Especially considering the offset language in his contract. What we should be looking for is a $10 million+ pay cut because he won't see that anywhere else.

Carr would absolutely take a pay cut, IF by doing so, would heal his reputation amongst the fans. Unfortunately he could take a 10mil pay cut and the fans will still dislike him. They'll say, "Carr trying to buy fan support, how terrible ..." He'd probably take a pay cut if the fans supported him and if we were only a couple players away from competing.

Carr doesn't care about healing his reputation, fan support or helping the team win. He cares about his bank account, as he should. This is his job, not some charity. If he takes a pay cut it's because he was presented with an ultimatum and he and his agent figured out the math.

correct. fans insert way too much emotion into these decisions and debates.

Taking their sweet time.

I'm sure they know the majority of what they are going to do and have been working on it since the day CKM was hired. They just have zero urgency to communicate anything to anyone outside the building. That even goes with staff hires. While we all know who the assistant coaches are going to be because of media reports, not a single one has been announced by the team. Nothing has been updated on the website, no press releases, nothing. I'm expecting both the cap clearing moves and the coaching announcements to happen in large dumps all at once.

This all day. To the vast majority (as it should be) it’s just a business. It’s their profession. Period.
It’s entertainment and they’re the entertainers, most have zero loyalty or commitment to a team or fan base, and that’s reciprocal from the team perspective, most times.

Many fans are way too attached, and I say that as one who was that attached for many many years. Until I realized I was worrying and getting upset over a game, played by multi millionaires who couldn’t care less about me, my fandom or my life lol. Craziness.

It’s just a very lucrative business, and I do still enjoy watching and keeping up with it all.

The restructuring of his contract last year helped to put the Saints in this situation. Carr has earned the contract given to him. 4 years for $150m. I’m not a math major but that is $37.5m a season before what portion of the $150 was guaranteed (I think $70m was). $37.5m is a middle of the road salary for a starting QB that is not on their 1st contract. His cap number is high because of moving money to the backend of the contract.

Last season just had too many injuries to be consistent enough to be good as a team. If the Saints can be healthier this season they will be in the hunt of the division. There is no team going to run away from the others. Saints do need to have a solid draft to start mixing in some youth and talent.
