Underhill: Kellen Moore said he took this job with the idea that Derek Carr would be his QB (116 Viewers)

I wonder if Moore knew how unpopular that would be with the fanbase when he took the job?

Some of the Carr criticism is over the top and unwarranted. Some is valid. But the fact is that he is not well liked even among most that are okay with him being the starting QB this year. In fact, I would guess that many that are fine with him starting this year would not be fine with him starting next year.

So I wonder if Moore realised this and just doesn't care or if this will come as a bit of a surprise to him?

His job is to win games. Winning over fans with his decisions is only an issue if he doesn't win enough games. And even then, it's still much more about winning games than what fans think they want.

For next year It’s always “as opposed to whom”?

If Pat Mahomes or Josh Allen come here, Derek would be gone.

But you want who else? Justin Fields???

Our fans have lost their minds and a lot of IQ points in a season that was about 89% to blame on injuries.

Let's try to understand that Carr gives Moore a better chance to establish his system.

It will be really hard for Rattler or a rookie to absorb and install of the information coming.

Moore can use Carr to stabilize the offensive line, to explain coverage, routes, etc to the members of the offense.

That does not mean that Carr is the quarterback of the future, it means that Carr is the best option they have to start the process.

I don't disagree. But that doesn't address whether he knew that it would be unpopular or if he didn't know. I don't think it would have changed his mind either way, but I am curious if he knew.

And while no coach is going to make decisions based on the feelings and opinions of fans and winning cures everything, if he doesn't win with Carr, he's going to burn a lot of the fan good will that every new HC has in the bank. But, sure, winning cures all.

Again, that has nothing to do with whether Moore knew it would be an unpopular decision.

Moore may well turn out to be right that keeping Carr in 2025 and possibly beyond is the right choice, but that wasn't the point of my post.
