Underhill: Kellen Moore said he took this job with the idea that Derek Carr would be his QB (151 Viewers)

If Moore wins with Carr, the fanbase will be won over. Winning cures all.
I don't think it's that simple. I think Carr will still be unliked...but winning would make him tolerable. Currently he's disliked and intolerable but the fan base was wary of him right @ the Chipotle comment. Way before winning or losing had anything to do w/ it.

Man I will continue to say that I just don’t see what others see in the guy. His tape to me is solid. He has lapses just like most other QBs in his tier, but for the most part, he’s efficient, can make all the throws, and doesn’t turn the ball over.

Carr indeed on tape is a solid QB. Coach types clearly see that.

I think he’s just had a very strange, anomaly career where he’s played on a bunch of really bad football teams for bad coaches.

You can’t tell me that if this man was Sean Payton’s quarterback, his reputation wouldn’t be completely different than it is today or that he wouldn’t have multiple playoff appearances and wins.

I don't disagree that Carr is a solid QB that ranges between average to above average. He doesn't do anything special and doesn't win many games for you on his own, but also doesn't lose many games on his own. I just personally want to shoot for more than that at QB since that type of QB means the margin of error for building a winning team is very thin. Especially when you pay them $40 million AAV.

Whereas with a more dynamic QB, one that has good mobility and can take the easy rushing yards and throw off schedule, the margin of error in building your roster is much wider. My main issue with Carr is that he is a statue in the pocket and I don't think that plays well in the modern NFL game. It also concerns me that he either can't or won't throw the ball over the middle. But, sure, he's a average QB that you can win games with if you build the right team around him.

But, I don't have a problem if Moore thinks Carr is his best option to win this year and wants to put the search for a young dynamic QB off for another year.

All I was curious about is if Moore realized that his decision would be so unpopular with fans? Not that I think he does or should care, but I am curious.

For the third time, I don't disagree with that. I'm just curious if he knew. I seriously doubt he would care and is going to bet on his own decision making on who should start, and he should, but I am curious if he knew the situation before he took the job? My bet would be that he did not know since he had many more important things to do that see how the fans feel about each player.
You'd have to ask Moore, not this board, if he knew.

I think it's highly likely that at some point Moore was made aware that fans booed Carr during a game.

I think it's also highly likely that Moore understands that the only way to keep a fan base in your corner is to win a lot more than you lose.

He said that today but that's not what he said when he was hired. its the old "what else was he supposed to say?".

He literally praised Carr's career and said he was excited to work with him and go through the process with him in the press conference.

The know it alls and Carr haters decided to characterize his comments as non-committal and then, once the decision was made to go with Carr, subsequently began the whole "Oh he must be getting forced to do this now" charade.

The go-to will now be “what else is he supposed to say?”

Not sure why it’s hard to accept that Kellen Moore simply wants Carr to be his starting QB in 2025.
We have a coaching staff that can make the playoffs with Carr.
But in all honesty, would you expect him to say he did not want Carr as his QB (if that were the case)? So, this was always going to be what he would say regardless.

Moore has had success with all different styles of QBs (like Payton did despite what people want to think), so I'm fine with it. I hope he can unlock Carr's potential.

I haven’t had that “Confident every time he drops back” feeling since Drew. Obviously not to Drew’s level of course, but I actually feel good when I see our QB drop back now for the first time in a long time.

He is an average to slightly above average QB IMO. He is not a bad QB, but it appears that he needs a very good cast around him for any chance to succeed. He does not appear to make a team better. When he has a clean pocket, I think he is pretty good. He seems to struggle in the red zone fairly consistently which leads to questions about his ability when the pressure is on. Unfortunately 12 years without a playoff win cannot always be everyone else's fault.

I literally think it's that simple. No one was hating on Carr when he was bombing Sheed in weeks 1 and 2 last season.

Fan goodwill doesn't last long either way. There will be fans incensed with any number of things done, regardless of their merits, for the duration of his tenure - so why worry?

I'm not worried and I didn't say he should worry. I just said I'm curious.

I guess to some extent I think one of the things DA did wrong was he failed to relate to the fans as much as he failed to relate to his players. Payton related to both. We knew Payton was and butt crevasse, but he was our butt crevasse. I'd just like to see Moore be able to relate to the fans and integrate into the community. For better or worse, New Orleans is place that loves you if you love it and it will hate you if you fail to show that love first.

All you had to do was keep your mouth shut, Ke-Ke.

This is what some Saints wanted to hear at Kellen's introduction. AG didn’t come out and say they were moving on but his tone suggested they where.

He never had a problem throwing over the middle with the Raiders. We haven't had any decent targets to go over the middle and when he did to Olave, he got crucified for it.

We need better options at WR and Means/KAJr could be the answers there whereas Olave is not.
