This is fair. As for saying Saints "orbit" I do that deliberately because some of this becomes sensitive. But you can think of Saints orbit as higher ups, not lower level front office personnel. My approach is to try and remain agnostic on matters like this, and focus on the credibility of information. I don't make it personal. I try and fact find and weigh the information as it comes in. The credibility of information for me is dependent on the ability of those reporting that information to at least qualify their work, if they can't show their work, whoever it is, even media figures. So if Underhill says he thinks Payton might be considering retirement, I'm not going to value that in the same way I would if Underhill reports that he has spoken to officials high up in the organization who believe Payton is contemplating retirement. There is a huge difference in those pieces of information, even though they would have come from the same person.
I do think after the season the Saints had, and the point Payton is in his career here, that retirement is something that exists as a possibility. I don't reject it out-of-hand, but I'm also not aware of any reports linked to team officials or persons otherwise close to Payton. "Saints orbit" is too vague, honestly. There are things that players, or lower level front office personnel, might not know but they are certainly in the Saints orbit. It doesn't make them reliable sources of information on all matters Saints related, and certainly not something as personal as this. And the internal workings of any organization can be rife with speculation that ultimately isn't true.
