Underhill on Payton (2 Viewers)

My approach is to try and remain agnostic on matters like this, and focus on the credibility of information. I don't make it personal. I try and fact find and weigh the information as it comes in. The credibility of information for me is dependent on the ability of those reporting that information to at least qualify their work, if they can't show their work, whoever it is, even media figures. So if Underhill says he thinks Payton might be considering retirement, I'm not going to value that in the same way I would if Underhill reports that he has spoken to officials high up in the organization who believe Payton is contemplating retirement. There is a huge difference in those pieces of information, even though they would have come from the same person.

I do think after the season the Saints had, and the point Payton is in his career here, that retirement is something that exists as a possibility. I don't reject it out-of-hand, but I'm also not aware of any reports linked to team officials or persons otherwise close to Payton. "Saints orbit" is too vague, honestly. There are things that players, or lower level front office personnel, might not know but they are certainly in the Saints orbit. It doesn't make them reliable sources of information on all matters Saints related, and certainly not something as personal as this. And the internal workings of any organization can be rife with speculation that ultimately isn't true.
This is fair. As for saying Saints "orbit" I do that deliberately because some of this becomes sensitive. But you can think of Saints orbit as higher ups, not lower level front office personnel.

No. There is still no more reported than before. Still silence. Still pure speculation. Even by Glazer who did not say, "Sean told me" about any of this. Still much ado about literally nothing because nothing is what we have. Not one of these talking heads have contributed a scitilla of substance.

The only thing we know that can be considered fact is that Payton has been silent on the issue. Everything else stems from that one fact.
Really? Even reading Glazer’s words that Payton is considering taking a break? And that he changes his mind every other minute?

From a post above…..

“Thinking about leaving coaching” is nothing?

🤔.

It wasn't to call you out, I just quoted those words because I wanted to be clear that's what I was addressing. I appreciate the qualification you've provided as to its use.

Those aren't Glazer's words. Listen for yourself. I started a thred with a link to Glazer's actual interview. I don't know who that @fantasygregory guy is, but he is not quoting Glazer correctly - or even close. Go check the link and listen for yourself rather than assuming some yo-yo on twitter is right. He saysnothing about leaving coaching or taking a break.

He says,""Sean (Payton) changes his mind every two seconds. We talk about it a lot. It's why I haven't reported anything because he changes his mind like every two minutes," Glazer said.

“But that’s also why I said two weeks ago on FOX NFL Sunday during the coaching carousel was that there could be a coach or two step away just because of these last two years of COVID, it’s taken its toll on people.”

Not that other crap.

gboudx says he listened to the entire segment and didn't hear Glazer make the comment that Payton is definitely thinking about taking a break. I trust his take. Did anybody here listen to it and come away with a different understanding?

I'm not sure who the person making the tweets is but this does illustrate the problem with all of this speculation and secondhand information; it's often subject to understanding/misunderstanding and interpretation and we're really no closer to knowing the truth.

I listened to that segment with Jay Glazer. I did not hear the part, "He’s definitely thinking about taking a break though." Glazer did talk about the issues Covid caused the past 2 seasons, the injuries, did say Sean changes his mind frequently(but said so in a joking manner). Glazer also said he will not report anything that isn't fact, which is why he hasn't reported anything. In short, he doesn't know anything.

@DavidM

I started a thread with a link to the actual interview so folks can go and hear for themselves.

@gboudx is right.

BTW, all the questions and answers were framed around how Payton fits into the CBoys coaching picture. Puts a slightly different slant on the words that Glazer actually spoke.

Can we all now agree that there is some substance to this?

Knew it wasn’t just bs. I don’t want to lose Drew and then lose Sean a year later. Man I hope he comes back at least for another year.
I have no issue with the reports that Sean was taking vacation to relax, recharge and assess. That's what coaches do.

I have issue with the way Rappaport presented, then stepped out and let speculation run wild.

Never provided any additional info other than his original tweet. Which then leads to posting here, and subsequent mad speculation.

We would have been better served not knowing a damn thing until Sean arrived at his decision, because it's his decision to make. Precisely why Glazer is inside Sean's inner circle. He doesn't run to twitter at the first hint of something.

Now here we are with outside interference playing a small role in Sean's decision making processes. That's not fair to him nor us. It's bs.

I hate social media lol

I saw the other thread after my last post on this one. Still think he’s truly considering stepping away, for a plethora of reasons, not just from that tweet. Hoping he decides to stay.

Supposedly Glazer said that Sean is definitely considering stepping away from coaching, but that he changes his mind every other minute.

I wholeheartedly believe he’s contemplating stepping away, and I hope he doesn’t. That’s all I know, that I hope he stays.

Except he didn't say that. Again, I urge you to listen for yourself.

He was asked how Payton fits into the Cowboy coaching plans and Glazer responds (while laughing) with the every 2 seconds remark. Nowhere does Glazer say Payton is considering stepping away. He says that Payton was one of those he was thinking about with his Fox Covid remark, but doesn't say Payton gave him any indication of that being the case.

Seriously, instead of saying someone supposedly said, go listen.

This is like that game where a bunch of people sit in a circle and relay a message around the circle to see how much the message changes from the original message. It's just that in this case we're muddling the message at the 2nd person
Blame Rapoport

I did listen. My ‘supposedly’ statement was in reference to reading where he’d (Glazer) been quoted as saying that Sean has considered retirement but (Sean) waffles back and forth.

This transcript reads to me that the idea of stepping away has been broached by Sean, to Jay.

"Sean (Payton) changes his mind every two seconds.

Glazer said that Payton keeps going back and forth, that he was in Cabo the last couple of weeks, and that he has a meeting with owner Gayle Benson again in the early part of the week.

Regardless, it isn’t that serious to me, but I do hope he stays on.
