usama young vs. the draft (2 Viewers)

IMO....

We drafted Usama to eventually take over....in 3-4 years. When he was drafted, Jason David was thought to be the answer to the side opposite Mike. With Jason Craft, Usama was supposed to be able to sit pretty, get some exp, and then slowly work into the role. Then David did not adjust to Man Coverage well....or at all, and MM got injured.

So now we have a guy who could be a great starter in 2-3 years, a guy that didn't adjust well to MC and I would wager he has only a 15% chance of ever adjusting, two aging nickel/dimes, and a should be pro-bowler who may not come back at 100%.....and Anwar Phillips.

In other words, we don't have a single CB that is a lock to start next year. So we can get none and hope that a great recovery with MM happens and a HUGE miracle with one of the other five happens (or Anwar, too), draft someone and hope he's ready to make a big leap to the NFL, or sign someone big and hope MM recovers quickly (best odds).

For as terrible as Jason David was for most of last season, he did show improvement later in the season... He also showed that he can make some plays. MM will be back, and according to Mike D. he is progressing well. Usama Young is a future starter for us... as soon as next season... and Jason Craft is still serviceable. I don't think we're going to sign a name FA CB, and I don't think we should. I also don't think we should go CB in the 1st round.

Fixing the pass-rush and 2 of the 3 LB positions will make the CBs we have look alot better... trust me. However, if Josh Bullocks is still at FS, we'll still give up some big plays.

What games were you watching? David was very consitent, He was horrible from game 1 through game 16. Our line is much better than our secondary. Please get some help at the CB and LB position.

CB, DT, MLB are positions I want significant improvement at. There are others but these are key. I know our CB situation sucks but I would take a stud DT first if there was one. A solid DL will improve the stats of everyone behind them. I like the coach O pickup. Hopefully our DL is a force this year. The Giants showed how important a quality DL can be. We need someone demanding doubleteams in the middle to free up Smith and Grant. We need to pressure QB's so they can't pick us apart. If we keep giving QB's all day we won't improve. QB pressure is my #1 wish for the O8 season.

the saints were one win away from the superbowl. going in to next season with david and young as your hopeful starters is just plain stupid. how can any one sit here say that with confidence. do you not remember last season! there should be more panic now because of the injury of mckenzie. our secondary is GARBAGE plain and simple.

David made no improvements, the guy is a good waste of skin. If we go in to next season with a 5'8" zone corner playing man, then once again the Saints secondary will lead the league in every passing category again. We cannot afford to take another step back.

No need to start another thread. Check out the quote of one of the recent articles at the SR homepage. Here's the quote:

"As far as the returning players, Young figures to push David hard for the starting spot and it wouldn't be surprising if he was the projected starter going into fall."

Really?

If that's truly the case, then either...

a) the Saints did themselves NO favors by leaving Usama on the sidelines as much as they did in '07

b) our defensive coordinator as good (or bad) a talent evaluator as Rick Venturi,

c) both a & b ---or,

d) this article missed the mark big time

I think it's more complicated than any of the above choices. Overall, I believe Usama Young will be a fierce competitor for one of our starting corner positions (...Jason David's salary and all)!

:gosaints:

I don't think its odd at all being as how we were still in the hunt up until the end or close to it. You don't throw the project guys in until you are totally out but that doesn't mean Usama can't progress enough during the offseason to beat out David.

A friend of mine who is a Colts fan said that you go into every offseason assuming that your players will get better. That is why the Colts are affective in passing off guys like David and starting a guy like Hayden.

Young and David will both be better next year and I expect Young to beat out David fairly easily.
