Yeah would hate to lose Bell but probably can't meet his demands. I think they also have confidence in CJGJ as a possibly replacement

Bell had demanded more than the price the team can pay. And probably over more years then the Jenkins deal will be for.

So Jenkins becomes the relatively short term bridge to CJGJ or whoever else we bring in thru the draft.

Don't blame the organization if we placed a value on Bell and offered that amount, Bell rejected the offer, and we moved on signing another player.

Am told that the Panthers starting safety tandem is expected to be Juston Burris (agreed to 2yr deal on Monday) and Tre Boston (3yrs) - and that was team’s targeted plan entering free agency. On Burris, staff pretty high on him and goes w Rhule wanting to find up-and-comers.

I have to believe we've made an offer to Bell, but if he does an Ingram and doesn't accept it while he goes out in the market to test his value, we have to look at other options. I'd love to have Bell back, but having Jenkins is a good plan B and much better than not having either of them.

I'd be fine with the move assuming that Jenkins makes less than Bell. If he doesn't...this screams a Byrd-Jenkins repeat...trading a young, ascending player for an aging player, likely to be on the decline. It's all good as long as Bell makes more.

It's not an apples to apples comparison because Jenkins wasn't giving maximum effort with the Saints. It appeared as though he had peaked as a player. He admittedly recommitted himself to being a pro after he landed in Philly. So we brought in an All Pro in Byrd and he was never seen again. Jenkins went on to become a Pro Bowler.

The FO takes a lot of heat for letting Jenkins and Hicks walk but both guys admitted that they decided to dedicate themselves to their craft after leaving NOLA. Hard to put that on the FO.

I'm a big fan of Bell's physicality and toughness but he did end the season on a low note with the knee injury. You can find a replacement for a 5-11, 205lbs in the box SS. I hate to see him go but you can't invest ridiculous money in a SS. I see Jenkins as a slot DB which is more valuable in the NFL than a SS. Sucks but it's a business.

Have we ever re-signed a safety after his rookie deal? Jenkins, KennyV, now Von... I can't think of one that we brought back.

Not doubting you whatsoever, but would love to read the quotes/interviews where they admitted to this.

Both guys have talked about it quite a bit over the years. I just did a quick google and this is Jenkins touching on it:

Being let go by the team that drafted me was challenging. I felt like I had fallen short of the expectations of my coaches, teammates, fans, and most importantly myself! It was one of the first meaningful “Failures” that I’ve been through, and it caused me to struggle with doubt in my own abilities and gifts. Those same doubts, however, turned into motivation and helped propel me to the height of my career. What I had perceived as a failure, God use to build me up.
