Vonn Bell (1 Viewer)

Can't see Bell staying after MJ signing... unless maybe they are bringing back the 3 safety look from a few years ago

They can run 3 safeties now with Williams, MJ and CGJ. Bringing back Vonn may slide CGJ to the slot full time. But they probably won't bring back Vonn now.

I agree. He's young and has been ascended every year.
I dont hate the Jenkins signing but hes at the back end of his career. Someone is going to get a very good player in Bell.

Here’s the thing... Bell was offered $7.5M annually and he rejected it. The Saints have their number and Bell has his... His was too much for the Saints.
Bell is a good player, and I’ll miss seeing him with our boys... but he is not an elite SS. I loved his fire and his nose for loose balls and tenacity in run support.. but...
Bell was/is slightly below average in coverage.
Also, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson has all the same skills as Bell, only he’s faster and better in coverage. Jenkins comes in as an immediate upgrade over Bell (even though Bell and Jenkins’ arrows are pointing in opposite directions). Jenkins makes the secondary better now.
When Jenkins moves on, Gardner-Johnson will be entering his prime, and I fully expect CJGJ to be among the elite SS’s in the league.

If I was vonn, I would come back to the saints on a 2 year deal at a lower price than I’m asking and go to free agency in 2022 when the new TV money comes out. He’ll be on a team that will be successful, more tv viewers for recognition, and higher chance for individual success due to good players around him. The Saints can structure it with a 3rd voidable year to lower cap cost. He’s obviously not getting what he’s asking for, and coming back it he only real play for future personal success, IMO.

I think that is debatable. Vonn Bell has been very good the past two seasons, is getting better, and has excelled in our system. Jenkins has been very good the past two season, is likely to regress, and is an unknown in our system.

Im not sure I agree with this. It became popular to talk about how good he was but was he? I’m not saying he was bad and yes, his leadership but JUST as a football player, is he a game changer/ difference maker? I don’t think he was a $8mm to $10mm a year player.

Jenkins is a better player BUT an older player, has more injury risk and won’t give you the longevity Bell will but for one season, I’m happy with Jenkins.

Agreed and if this is Murray/Ingram all over again, it falls on Bell just as it fell on Ingram. He could have remained a Saint and chose to listen to his agent's inflated contract numbers that didn't pan out.
Or is it Malcolm Jenkins all over again? And what I mean by that is letting a S who is in his prime with great ability go and then signing someone else (in this case, oddly enough, Malcolm Jenkins) who might turn out not to fill the bill.

Jenkins has been better against the pass the past few seasons...but worst against the run. Bell has also been a turnover machine. There are definitely less risks with Bell...he's in our system and playing well and he statistically has a good chance to improve. Jenkins is NOT in our system so there is no telling if how he will be in our system, and he is statistically at an age that I'd expect a decline. There's more risk with Jenkins...no question

We're basically running Gregg Williams system... the same one Jenkins played when he was here. I'm not sure what they did in Philly but a player as smart as MJ should be able to pick up things quickly. He'll have to learn how to make adjustments and non-verbally communicate with his secondary mates... but I don't think he will have a problem picking things up.

I hope not... at least.

I guess I missed the post but where was it reported that we offered him $7.5M/yr?

If he turned that down then really hope we can expect him to sign elsewhere (hopefully AFC) in the $8.5-$10M/yr range to bump up the compensatory pick. (Potentially a 4th rounder)
