Walter Football's Take on the Winston Signing (4 Viewers)

This comment from Walter Football is particularly dumb. He's not the long term answer? So I guess that's why the Saints only signed him to a 2 year deal. And since he is on a cheap 2 year deal, it won't stop them from pursuing other options if Winston doesn't continue to improve and work out in the next 2 years. So, how could the signing be damaging in the long run?
Exactly. That was the lamest part of the Walter Football analysis. We don't sign Jameis short-term, then who's going to be our QB at this point and at what cost? It was the most rational and safest move we could make that would still give us a chance to win.

I’m glad you laid this out and saved me the keystrokes. He doesn’t even follow his own reasoning.

This is ideal as can be for the Saints given that the marquee guys are all tied up. You re-sign a player who was ascending in your system before injury. You get him on a contract that allows both sides wiggle room. If he pans out, then we can offer him a lucrative deal and hopefully keep him. If he doesn’t, then no harm no foul and it doesn’t hamstring us for years to come.

If we couldn’t get a Russell, Rodgers, or Watson🥴, then getting Jameis back in house was the absolute best fall back plan.

I didn't fully understand how much the contract was for. My grade is B plus. With a two-year contract, the Saints are keeping their options at quarterback open.

Long term, when Paytonless Winston becomes the Winston of old, we'll be picking mid round for the next several years and not getting the best talent in the draft. Nor will free agents want to sign here. We'll waste the remaining years of AK and MTs primes along with the best defense we've had in decades playing inconsistent football. At that point we'll probably end up firing DA and blowing up the team.

All this team needed was a game manager QB to throw smart intermediate passes and hand the ball off and another RB to take some of the load off of AK. Winston is a mistake because he likes to play come from behind hero ball and he no longer has anything to stop him from playing that.

First, you have no reason to believe that Winston will revert to what he did with Arians, Second, even Arians said that 12 of those interceptions were on the receivers. Third, Payton even said that the interceptions weren't all on Winston. Fourth, it was only one year that he had major interception issues. The other years his interceptions looked similar to most young QBs.

What stops him from reverting is not being in Arians offense and the things he learned from working with Payton and Carmichael for two years. Winston has plenty to work on but crazy numbers of interceptions is likely not an issue anymore. What he needs to do is be more accurate with short and mid-range passes.

Also, Having a QB like you want is much more difficult than you think and it's not how teams win in the modern NFL. It's not the 1980s or 1990s.

The guy you want isn't available this year and the closest thing to it is Winston. It's not Jimmy G or Baker Mayfield who throw about as many interceptions as Winston has in the past except they lack his upside for big plays. Even if Winston plays like he did last year we have a shot at the playoffs. And, if he plays better, when he did for several years in Tampa then we might even have a shot to make some noise in the playoffs. And frankly, it's time to take the training wheels off Winston and let him show what he can do. If he succeeds, great. If he fails then we cut our loses and find someone else. But you can't win long term in the NFL by playing it safe at QB.

Beyond that, we are only tied to Winston for 2 years which is pretty short term. And, if we can find a better QB next year or the year after, we can let Winston go and go with that QB. But, it would be irresponsible of the front office to waste this defense on a rookie QB or trade draft picks for guys that might be worse than Winston in Jimmy G and Mayfield, when Winston is available on a two year deal for a bargain contract. Then if after 2 years Winston hasn't become great or we haven't find a franchise QB, then you blow it up and start over. But it would be foolish to do that now with the defense we have and MT and Kamara on the team.

And, let me get this straight, you think it's bad long term because we will be in playoff contention and won't suck with Winston at QB? You want to just blow it all up and lose for better draft picks?

The Walter Football website has a lot of raw information, which makes it worthwhile to visit. But its opinions can be on the extreme side and often are worthless. That site gives the Winston signing a C minus grade--I disagree and, under the circumstances, give the signing a solid B (had the signing happened earlier at a tad lower price, I could see a B plus grade). But I offer for your consideration the Walter Football comments on the signing:

"I've compared the 2022 Saints to the final season of That 70s Show. Drew Brees and Sean Payton (Kelso and Foreman) are no longer around, so the team/show won't be nearly as good. Sure, they've brought back Jameis Winston (Donna?) but who really cares. The Saints are going to be a mediocre team with this current build. There's an outside chance they'll make the playoffs, but even if they do, they won't advance very far. They'd be better off blowing the entire operation.

"Winston did a solid job of taking care of the football last year, which was surprising. However, Winston is not the long-term answer for New Orleans. All the Saints are doing is trying their best to stay relevant and mediocre, but signings like this will be damaging in the long run."

I disagree strongly with this analysis, but then I know nothing of That 70s Show and have no idea who Kelso and Foreman are. The Saints can still draft high a quarterback this year or next draft. But I thought I would offer a evaluation of the signing very different from what most on this forum--who know the Saints better than the people at Walter Football--think.
This rating is just one A..H.... opinion.

LOL, help me out. Who exactly do you think wants to follow Jimmy G or Mayfield? You didn't like Watson either.

Who is this magical player who would have done this for the Saints this year?

Walter Football has a lot of data, and a lot of bad takes. Be wary of them, although they can be useful at times.
