Listening to all of the talk radio over the past few days, it seems like there are an awful lot of talking heads out there reminding us constantly on how much easier it was for Brees to break the record than it was for Marino... to the point that I'm really tired of hearing about it.

So is it just that I'm noticing it more being a Saints fan, because I don't remember any of this criticism back when Peyton Manning broke his TD record, and then Brady upped it soon after.

The yardage record for Marino was significant, but Dan Fouts had a couple of years with 4,700+ yards I think.

That TD record blew everyone away... I think I heard the record before Marino was Y.A. Tittle with 36 back in 1963, and Marino upped it to 48... That was the record no one thought would be broken.

But I really don't remember all of this kind of talk when that record went down...

People are trying to factor in the changing times. Yes things have changed, but I think they are a wash. Defenses did not blitz like they do now, back in Marino's day. They are also much more complexed, meaning a QB has a lot more reading to do.

It was extremely sacred to Marino because that's one thing he had to hold on to, having never won a SB ring.

No it was barely mentioned when Manning broke the TD record and certainly no-one saying it should have an asterix

Makes you wonder how different it would be this week if Brady had gotten there first instead of Brees. I'm guessing a little less about Marino and a little more about how great Brady is, and how this is another great accomplishment in a great career.

Brees has gotten a heap of praise about this record and it seems to have elevated his status to being that of legend.

Hmm, we must not be listening to the same stuff... I've been hearing a lot of conversations that start with something like....

"Not to take anything away from Drew Brees, but... "

I agree. Lots of talking head BS, the common vernacular is now "nice record but not what it meant in Dan's day and will likely be broken again soon". For some reason the media really latched on to us losing to the rams and bucs and that has really given them ammunition to doubt us, I believe that has influenced these opinions. So much for any given sunday...

PS I believe all of this garbage will only fuel Drew, Sean and the rest of the team to come out on fire for the rest of the season, to prove all the doubters wrong and erase any doubt of the greatness of Drew.

For whatever reason, some people still view Brees as an outsider to the 'Elite' club. These are the same people who would vote against Brees into the HOF as a 1st balloter...or at all. With that belief, they can't reconcile that a non-elite QB could have possibly broken such a cherished record as Dan Marino's and so they manufacture reasons why Dan's record should remain unspoiled in perpetuity. (i.e. record means nothing these days, new record 'not so special'. They never truly address the Whys of the situation, only give a cursory analysis because they idolized Marino growing up)

But yeah, I don't expect the same conversation when Brady passes Marino's mark this coming week. It'll be like "See? Brees isn't so special - the most Elite QB in the league came really close to the same mark that Brees set".

lot of threads, of every one that is saying it in negative way at all.
every one tries to pull the "respekt" bs
lot of praise out there of the record..
think of this.. 5 people heaping praise on you, and 1 calls you an bad name, which are you going to notice..

and it seems like a lot more discrediting because people posting multi threads of them.

and anyone that gives that easier crap, yes its easier to throw now, passing stats avg higher, think lot of that is, there are better qb's now than then as well.
but, brees avg, is higher by a larger margin over the avg total, than what marino's was. all that has to be said to solidify it.

I was just about to post something like this. Basically, it comes down to something similar to "old money" vs. "new money".

Or maybe it's because of the prominence given to the articles that are nay-saying on NFL.com, ESPN, See BS, etc? Makes it seem like a lot more people are saying this than what are...but the Mike Freeman article put a lot of doubt into the heads of 'journalists' who, while complimenting Brees, are always tempering that praise with Freeman's question.

Most I have heard on TV all agree that "Marino was more impressive". Too bad he didn't know how to win a Superbowl.

Talking heads gonna talk. Bad bowl games. Bad early season NBA. Drew Brees, Sean Payton, "Dirty" team. I know what I'd pick.

Yesterday Sportscenter spent 10 full minutes on Brees and the record. How Brees got there. Summing up the season with highlights from each game. How incredible it was that the record is 27 years old. How classy Brees was handling the situation.

Not one word about running up the score, or it being "easier" now.

But keep thinking the whole media's out to get New Orleans and all its fans. It's just really weird and depressing that most of you can't relax and enjoy this, one of the great weeks in franchise history, without worrying if the networks are giving the proper amount of respect.

Shut up, Saints fans, and just enjoy this.
