Was Jesus a socialist? (2 Viewers)

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

“If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3).

Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. Proverbs 10:4

Jesus was not a Socialist. But he did preach charity. The Bible wants us to take care of each other out of love, and not obligation. The bible does not support obligatory government mandated payments to the poor. It also tells us that those who are poor have a responsibility to take care of themselves. I think most people who are against a socialist America but also for a Christian one would tell you that they want Americans to help each other without the influence of the government.

I think where I've had my own issues with socialism is that it seems that socialism seeks to delegate compassion to the government, rather than exhort it as the duty of every person.

On the other hand, even as a conservative, I see no problem with a government spending its money to give simple free glasses to the sight impaired, hearing aids to the hearing impaired, wheel chairs to the lame, etc. That kind of thing doesn't seem like it would become a financial burden on the government, nor cause dependency.

For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 Now when he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle, and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right you will receive.’
8 “So when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning with the last to the first.’ 9 And when those came who were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise received each a denarius. 11 And when they had received it, they complained against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the heat of the day.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.”

every single viewpoint imaginable can be taken from the Bible. it just depends on what you're looking for.

please stop. you're boring me.

This is cracking me up, most of these guys don't even know what socialism is. They think socialism is when one party just sits at home while they collect money from working people. Socialism is the ownership of production by the WORKING class. Socialism advocates people working, it just doesn't advocate people being paid horribly while doing most of the work and the rich people reaping all of the benefits.

Selling ALL your possessions and giving it to the poor is not charity, that's socialism

Jesus wasn't a politician or an economist. Think in spiritual terms.

"Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your father in heaven"
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

"'If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he must be put to death, and you must kill the animal."

I can quote the Bible too.

I am an atheist. I was just pointing out how most conservatives tend to be very religious but condemn socialism when the man they worship seems to not have a problem with it.

So that was the point of this thread... you wanted to play gotcha with religious conservatives? You know behind the words on the screen there is a real person that you could have real conversation with if you wanted. Welcome to Saintsreport btw.

Note what socialism is. A system where the state or collective community dictates the distribution of goods.

What is Jesus said is for the man to change his heart in a completely voluntary action of love towards others. The man chose not to and Jesus let him walk away.
