I think the reason for the decline is because of the changes in defensive packages. From 2000’s and before most defenses ran base 4-3 or 3-4 on 1st & 2nd down, bringing in a nickel and sometimes a dime DB and maybe a pass rush specialist on 3rd down. Now most teams base defense is a nickel and some employ 3-3-5 as their base. Unless it’s a goal line or very short yardage down, teams rarely run a true 4-3 set, there are some teams that still run 3-4 like Pittsburgh and Carolina.

There’s also more versatility in LB’s and DB’s these days. Back then there were seperate positions of FS’s and SS’, now days they’re pretty similar and interchangeable.

We were just discussing this last night while watching the Lions/Rams game. We just witnessed one of the greatest QB eras there is ever going to be. That Brees, Manning and Brady all played at the same time and close to the same length is amazing and there were a number of other really good QBs as well.

I was watching this fantasy football progam around 4 pm CT. The host lameted that only one Qb so far had passed for 300 yards and it made me think the Golden age of the qb might be over. He said defenses now get to.the qb quicker than ever. As a result you see shorter pass attempts.

Me i have another viewpoint that adds or compliments his thoughts. Its that qb talent has taken a dip. Its not indicating the current group of qbs ate bad. Its more indicative of how great the talent was at that position from 2005 to late 2019s.

In that time period 1st tier Qbs Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Peyton played. While greats such as Warner and Farve were winding down thier careers at that time. In a tier below them you had Rothlisberger, Ryan, Stafford, Romo, There were also who played good for a few year stretch in that time.

Its highly unlikely we will ever see qb talent at that level ever again in the NFL.

Nonsense. The league will adjust rules to favor scoring, and gullible fans will once again cry out that THEIR QB is the GOAT.

There is no GOAT. You CANNOT compare players of different eras to each other. It's like comparing apples to sea cucumbers.

I would disagree that the age of the QB is over, which somewhat implies that you can win without a good QB. The elite QB's regularly opening seasons with 300-yard games were in their primes later in their careers. We have a lot of young QB's in the league right now, and we're comparing it to an era where the top QB's were putting up record breaking numbers in their 30's. Manning was 37 when he threw for 5,477 yards and 55 TD's, and three of Brees' 5,000-yard seasons were at age 32+ (with one at age 37). Brees also had nine seasons with 30+ TD's from age 30-39, but only one from age 23-29.

In 2015, when the elite four of Brees/Brady/Rodgers/Manning were still starting, the average starter age was 29.3, and 15 starters were 30+ years old.

In 2019, the most recent big year for 300+ yard games (13 total), the average starter age was 29.3, and 16 starters were 30+ years old.

In 2024, the average starter age in week one is 27.6, with only seven starters that are 30+ years old.

In time, I think the new class of top QB's will emerge and establish themselves, but they need more time to develop.

No I believe QB matters more than ever. I also believe an elite TE matters as much to, which all final 4 teams last year had.

Yeah that golden era is over. And it’s an ebb and flow thing, prior to the QB era you had the RB era. I currently feel this is a WR era.

Phillip Rivers, Russel Wilson, Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan were in that era too.

Defenses are also playing more 2 high to combat. I think that’s the reason Payton is struggling offensively. It’s a system that wants to throw the ball down field but defenses aren’t allowing it, and yet it’s also an offense that would rather pass to set up the run than run to set up pass. I’m sure it’s very frustrating for him

This HC is completely clueless and has no sense of how to utilize the Running Game and has Bo Pix Nix throw it 45 plus times....Really,.............The GM needs to fired immediately I am still dumbfounded how he still has a Job when George Payton is without a doubt the worst GM in the NFL..........The play calling is atrocious and predictable... Do a real rebuild and Fire them all and restart the program once again. Honestly the Denver Broncos should have never fired HC Jerry Roseburgh and real HC that knew how to use the Running Game to Help The Pass Game.........Don't get me started on the rehire of Vance Jospeh and the hire of the OC who is calling these plays? Time for yet another Miserable Year. The Denver Broncos have been officially eliminated lol

Maybe the “era of great quarterbacking” is over, but most likely not.

In my experience (55 yrs old) it seems older fans in particular frequently believe the quality of play is getting worse as top flight QBs from one generation give way to the next generation.

When Montana, Elway, Marino, and Kelly were phasing out people thought the next gen would never equal them, but guys like Aikman. Young, and Favre kept it going.

The same thing happened again as those guys got older and only Peyton Manning appeared to be the next legend. Yet, just a couple of years later though and we see Brady, Brees, Rodgers, etc. emerge as the next crop of generational HOF QBs.

Now it’s happening again. We already have Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, and Burrow, with others like Prescott and Herbert close to their level and young guns like Stroud and Purdy pushing their way into the upper echelon in their very short careers.

As such, I don’t see QB play getting worse, just different, as the game evolves. I also think older fans are often resistant to this evolution and the eventual changing of the guard involved.

I'm telling you man, Payton didn't or hasn't evolved yet. His scheme is a relic for an NFL that doesn't exist anymore. Most of these QB's aren't Drew Brees, or Brady or any of those guys from that era and defenses aren't playing the game that way either.

Bo Nix is either going to force him to adapt, or he'll be out of the league with the other relics. Meanwhile DA's defense has adapted pristinely.

Sean could never muster it without Brees, think that was the reason he got out when he did. It often leave you wondering if they could have done more past the 09 season with better coaching staff. Most of what was on that staff never got jobs elsewhere and if they did it wasnt for long.
