Jameis for all intents and purposes is QB #1 but all signs are pointing to Dennis Allen wanting to have his guy at QB. New Orleans signed Andy Dalton six days ago on March 30 and Bortles supposedly requested his release after the signing. Saints didn't grant it until after we secured the picks, suggesting we must feel good about our chances to replace him on the roster.

By looks the Saints will have a competion for the #2 Job between Dalton and the Rookie, with Ian Book maybe making it interesting. Neither Book or Dalton are capable of pushing Winston for the #1 spot, but the right rookie QB could.

By and large the one we've been most tied to is Kenny Pickett. We've scouted him at senior bowl, combine, and pro-day, and he along with Malik Willis has been either 1a and 1b in this class. If you like upside then Willis is your guy, if you like a higher floor it's Pickett. Regardless of your choice, a well known football proverb is you're either a team that has a good QB or you're one that's looking. If you're the Saints why not get a head start now? Atlanta and Carolina are in the same market and Tampa's maybe a year or two behind. If you hit on the QB you have a leg up in your division for the forseeable future and by chance you've acquired two picks that give you enough ammo to jump in front of Carolina and Atlanta. In fact it's poetic that these were the other two teams in the hunt for Watson.

Best case scenario is Jameis holds him off all year(that tough conversation with Jameis letting him know they valued him as a Bridge QB) and the rookie gets to sit and learn. Jameis becomes ideal trade bait and we get a top 50-75 pick for him along with whatever the Sean Payton trade fetches. Another exciting scenario is that the rookie is so good he forces them to bench Winston.

Still, early in this process everyone agreed that Dennis Allens tenure with the Saints rested on his ability to find a QB. Not a WR, not an OT, nor a Safety, but a QB.

Look's like he's identified one...again

If there is a specific QB they like, and you don't trade up high in the 1st unless it's for a specific guy, I don't know why you make this deal this early when you don't know if you have enough ammunition to go up and get that guy and you don't know if he will be gone before you can trade up to the spot you need to trade to in order to get him.

IMO, if the plan was to get a QB, then you wait to do a deal until closer to draft day and the deal is for a boat load of future picks. You don't bother using Philly as an intermediary and you don't pull the trigger on the deal until you know the guy you want is available and you know you have a deal with the team on the clock at that time. Anything else doesn't make sense.

If this were the case they could have saved $20m dollars on Jameis and let Dalton and Bortles bridge you until the rook is ready, which is why it wont be QB on day1 or day2. Drafting a QB early will only create controversy on 'who's the QB' when your current QB can use weapons and help. Saints need protection and they need playmakers.

Well I think to some degree you have some fail safe built in. Much like the Watson sweepstakes you put yourself in posiiton to make a play, then you hope for things to fall your way.

Saints are now in proper position to move to 5, but as you point out variables are there that could lead to many outcomesas well. I think the backup plan here is that the Saints are comfortable with the players that will be in that range as well.

Miss on QB and perhaps theres an OT and LT that can be placed around Winston but yeah I don't think they are looking to build around him, they are looking to replace him. His contract doesn't scream build around me money and neither does their obvious flirting with Watson then pivot back to Winston.

Reread. I said the problem w/ Bortles/Dalton or any of those guys is they CANT challenge Winston for #1. If you go up and draft a QB you're hoping he can be a #2 and compete for #1 or out right Win it.
Said he wants a running qb brought in a rpo guy tried to get deshaun Watson yup ain’t no fire there
Never said he wanted a running QB. Said they liked a QB that can IMPROV.. that's not the same as a running QB or RPO QB. Your facts are wrong thus making your argument weak.

But it doesn't make sense not just jump directly to 5th now. 49ers did it last year to 3rd overall.

If Saints want a QB... They wouldn't be making trades for mid teen picks. They would go to the source.

If they really wanted a QB... They wouldn't play the waiting game for one.

If a QB fall that they covet... Will they pivot to QB/WR draft. Possibly. I think at that junction.

The best assessment you can make... is that the Saints got multiple picks in the teens of the draft.

What position group has the most projected value in teens? OT,WR, and then QB.

There’s not a lot of smoke, to be honest. Like, almost none.
Right. I think people are just seeing what they want to see. It could very well be that Bortles didn't want to compete with Dalton. Regardless of who we take in the 1st, I'm convinced it/they will be on offense. RIght now, WR and OT are the two biggest needs.

Where did DA say this?

And Watson isn't an rpo guy. He is a passing QB with some mobility, like Wilson.
In a interview said he wants his qb to be mobile he could mean like Jameis but 🤷 ;You’ve never seen deshaun run an rpo means you haven’t watched enough football

Yeah, if you don't think Winston is only a solid stop gap QB and your plan is to move up in the draft by any means necessary to get the guy you want, you don't give Winston a 2 year contract with 21 million guaranteed. You do what Atlanta did and sign Mariota or someone like him to a cheap contract. Hell, you might just sign Dalton as your bridge QB to the rookie. Makes no sense to tie up $21 million in Winston for 2 years if they plan is to go all in for a rookie QB in the top 10 of the draft.

That being said, I could see them taking Picket or Willis at #16 if one of them somehow falls to that spot.
