Will Ian Book be the next Saints QB to beat out Taysom to be the starter? (1 Viewer)

It's not about beating out Taysom. Taysom can do more and is more important in skill position depleted team playing his Taysom role which covers 3-4 different skill positions (RB, FB, TE and WR).

I was a huge Siemian fan when he came into the league. I thought he had the potential to be a 15 year franchise QB. He was accurate, very intelligent, and had a great sense about when to run. He sucked so bad after his rookie year I gave up. Can Payton take that native intelligence and make a real QB out of Siemian? It's possible! I think Book is underrated too. I will go through lots of popcorn and lots of QB watching to see how this plays out!

He didn’t play in his rookie season, and he was a late 7th pick, so not really sure what your expectations were, or what you saw, that made you give up on him so soon.

He had a respectable second season as a starter, at least statistically, but it went downhill from there. That’s also when Denver, as a team, really started falling off.

@bobad which is to say, I don’t know that your confidence was completely misplaced. He’s shown he can play, but he’s also struggled badly, arguably under less than helpful circumstances.

He’s got a solid opportunity now. Even though his career isn’t on the 15 year franchise QB track, there are some qualities to like about him and Payton will put him in a position to succeed. He’s got a really good line protecting him, an elite back to work with, but serious lingering concerns about pass-catching talent. It won’t be easy, but Payton will be able to diagnose if any offensive struggles are on him or the players around him.

Obviously, I meant his first season, not his rookie season. I explained what I liked about him, probably some of the same things Denver liked. Trevor is very intelligent, which may be his best attribute. I have to confess I like late-round QB's from small schools because they're underdogs and fun to root for.

I didn't mean to sound like I have confidence in Trevor. I'm hopeful, but not confident!

These guys aren’t beating him out, we’re so depleted at skill positions that he’s more desperately needed there, rather than QB. It’s about putting your best players on the field, and right now that means Trevor and Taysom rather than someone like Trautman and Taysom.

The best ability, is availability.
Yeah, Taysom shouldn't have gotten concussed off an illegal hit that got flagged but no fine or suspension. He should have been available. Now that Winston is not available off an illegal tackle, I guess his ability is not good either.

I was referring to your initial take on him that had you thinking he could be a franchise QB. But maybe confidence was a reach, anyway.

Hey, I’m trying to give you some credit here. (Plus buy into some hope, myself). ;)

Do you watch any college football? He lead his team to the CFP but lost to Bama but who doesn't now days. He had a good Notre Dame career nothing spectacular but far far from bad. He was good he could be could for the Saints in time but the jury is still out on that if he doesn't get to play much.
Admittedly don’t watch college anymore, watch nothing but the Saints, football wise.

Ty for the insight into his game, hope to see him play at some point.
