FINALLY. Couldn't be happier about this, even if my girl says "yeah don't be happy about others dying", but couldn't care less, one less dictator and who knows, maybe venezolanos will grow a brain for once. Good riddance HUEVÓN.

How is this a good thing? How do you benefit from his death? So our money hungry government can have more political control of his country? Believe it or not his people loved him! He helped the poor, and fought to rid his land of poverty.

The media we all get our information from portrays him as an evil man, but what evil has he done that our government has not done worse? Ask yourself this before listening to biased opinions of him. No I am not saying I agreed with some of the stunts he pulled off, but what has he done that presidents of our past have not? Has he sent drones to third wolf countries knowing innocent children would die in the cross fire? He has imprisoned those that opposed to his political campaigns, but have any of yyou studied about Mr. Honest abe, and the journalist he had arrested in Boston? People with nuclear weapons are considered evil, but how many have actually used them? Oh yeah only us.

What you have read about chavez is usually biased. No, he was not a good man, but remember that there are men with worst intentions then this small country president.

I got my info from my grandmother, 2 aunts, 2 uncles, several cousins, and family friends who live in Colombia.... I'm happy he's dead. What our govt has/does isn't relevant to this thread, regardless of anyone's opinion... besides, we all know our govt is a piece of work

Fair elections

There was nothing remotely suspicious about the integrity of the 2012 Venezuelan general election.

Former US President Jimmy Carter who was part of a panel of impartial international observers monitoring the freedom and fairness of the election called the Venezuelan Presidential system ‘the best in the world.’

The election was hailed as an example of democracy in action and the panel reported that candidates on both sides had ‘confidence in the integrity of the process.’

Given what happened in Florida a few years ago, Venezuela could probably teach the US a few lessons in free and fair elections.

Genuine democracy

More than 8 out of every 10 adult Venezuelans voted – a turnout that shames most western nations where apathy rules because the parties all represent the same vested interest groups.

To Chavez’s enormous credit he did much to turn Venezuela into a true democracy, empowering the poor of the barrios to register to vote and exercise their power as citizens to choose their own government – rather than have it chosen for them by others as has historically been the case.

Under Chavez’s rule, the number of voters rose by 8 million as the poor and disenfranchised finally took up their constitutional rights to elect a government.

Achievements

Many people who work for oil companies or who have been carried away by the relentless campaign of disinformation against Chavez are probably completely unaware of what he did achieve while in power.

Below are just a few of his major achievements which have improved life in Venezuela...there are many more. This is why Chavez was so successful at winning elections. It had nothing to do with electoral fraud.

The number of people living in poverty was reduced from 70.8 to 21 per cent
Unemployment reduced from 15 to 7.8 per cent
20 million people have benefitted from his subsidised food price programme and anti-poverty initiatives
The number of elderly people receiving pensions rose from 387,000 to 2 million
Thousands of new and refurbished schools have been created
10 new universities have been founded
There has been an increase in the number of doctors per 10,000 people from 18 to 58
Affordable decent housing has been offered for the first time to thousands living in slums.

Hate him if you want to – but don’t spread misinformation about his contribution or undermine his considerable achievements.

Unlike the vast majority of modern statesmen who represent oligarchies, oil companies, high-finance, and corporate greed, Chavez actually gave a damn about the poor, the disenfranchised and those unfortunate enough not to live in the country clubs of Caracas.

Seriously tho, i wonder of all those who say "he's done so many good things" if they have lived in venezuela. Curious. I have, my woman is venezuelan, and i saw the good results of chávez government.

Praying for peace in Venezuela, but happy this guy is gone. The country will be better off without him. Having lived there, and having friends who currently lived there, this is a good thing for everyone but the guys that sucked off the government teet for so long.

Bala, its funny you should mention the media being biased. The media in Venezuela is the exact opposite, and say he is a great guy. And you know why? In 2002 when they last kicked Chavez out of the country, he returned and had all his people from the ranchitos up on the hills in Caracas go and bring down tv station satalites so that people couldn't get the news being reported. Many reporters pre-Chavez were either terminated, or changed their tune because Chavez was going to have his people take care of them.

Because foreign oil companies, billionaire financiers, hedge-fund brokers, millionaire shareholders and industrialists never ever sucked the government teet or got rich off bail-outs, hand-outs, back-handers, corruption, and mutual contract awards?

When the rich syphon off the oil money it's good business, when the poor do it they're spongers and it's a disaster for everyone?

I wish you could have lived down there Geldo. You would have loved it. The government taking over everything from the oil rigs to the brewerys. Oh it was glorious!

And when the government had empresas shut down because their owners didn't play along with Chavez plan of reducing prices (and these were Venezuelan companies that he was shutting down).

Or maybe how you couldn't get many American goods down there (Tootsie Rolls for example because I wrote and asked them) when you can freely get them in Brazil or Columbia, because the economy is everywhere but stable.

It's okay mate - I lived in the capitalist playground of the Caribbean for the best part of a decade and used to drive past bare-foot women queueing for the water standpipe to be turned on for an hour a day while the guy in the hacienda next door used to water his plants with an always on sprayer.

No one is saying that Venezuela is a paradise. I have been there and I know it's not. I simply wish to create some balance in assessing the life of Hugo Chavez. He was fairly elected. He cared about the poor and disenfranchised and he did a lot to promote a measure of social improvement for those who normally get ignored in Latin America.

Insulting his mother and celebrating his death is beneath you.
