Why Ian Book was a steal. (1 Viewer)

If this kid shows any potential I would not be surprised to see Payton and his ego go with this kid like Seachickens went with Wilson. This kid will get the same opportunity as Winston and Hill to start. They didn’t bring him in to compete as a backup. We don’t have an appointed starter whether we think Winston or Hill already have the spot. This kid will play with the 1’s like the other 2. In my heart I think Payton drafted this kid to be the future especially only giving the other 2 guys one year contracts. It’s not like drafting a QB with Brees still in his prime, we have no QB so this pick means a little more.

He was an intended selection. He was not drafted in the 7th round or UDFA he was a 4th round pick a selection that had he been a RB, WR, LB, OL, S or CB people would be thinking potential year one starter or contributor, so to think Ian Book was not drafted with the intent to compete for the starting position whether that's this year or next is ridiculous.

Both current QB's are on 1yr deals and question marks going into the season. Book looks to fit the passing offense better than both even though Winston has the physical gifts and Hill has 4 yrs in the system and starting experience.

I've said in other threads that Payton will not be scared to go with this kid if he proves capable of handling the offense, he wasn't scared to go with Hill when his number came up and I truly believe Payton sees Drew Brees in Book and that's why he didn't shy away from grabbing the 6'0 211lb signal caller

Sometimes it is not how flashy of player you were in college or how high you was selected in the Draft, sometimes it is the fit between the player and the team that drafted them... Sean Payton is "some-what" familiar with his skill set, his ability, and limitations - to a certain degree. Therefore, in my opinion, the Saints was the best fit for Ian Book:
  • He's coming to a team that is not at the bottom of the barrel - we still have a talented roster, not rebuilding.
  • He's not expected to start immediately - so expectations are low, he can only improve from here.
  • He has a Coach that is an offensive minded genius - a QB's dream.
  • We don't have a definitive starter at this point - although Winston and Taysom are competing for the job.
  • I cannot think of another team where he has the same luxuries.
Who knows...he may turn out to be one of those late round gems for us. Only time will tell.

I just read he has mediocre completion % on intermediate passes... not the second coming of Brees like some said

Crazy, I compared him to Wilson and never read the article. He's also coming into the same situation as Wilson in his rookie year.

Not saying at all he will be the player Wilson is, just saying his size, skill set, and situation remind me of Wilson.

I’d rather someone who will contribute this season to be a steal tbh but hope he develops. Seems like a practice squad candidate this year to me

I have a feeling Book was picked because SP sees him as having potential as a project, not a starting QB.

Yes, like Brees, he's 6-foot with a birthmark. Great. But that's where the similarities end. Brees is one of the all-time greatest QB's at reading the defense and running through his progressions super-quick and being decisive in his throws. Book hasn't shown that. In all that winning, he's consistently shown that he's a one-read-then-scramble kind of guy.

Maybe that can be coached. Maybe not. But IMHO, Loomis and Payton aren't pulling the trigger on this guy thinking he's going to be the next starter.

Didn't read the whole thread, but even if Book pans out, I would not say he was a steal if we could have picked him up in later rounds.
Of course there is no way to know for sure if would have been available in later rounds...

Post in Italian. Percentages on intermediate and long passes (each QB has multiple seasons plotted)

Those are for deep balls not intermediate passes. ND was not an explosive offense when it came to the deep ball they took strategic shots down field.

Bobby and Mike D. don’t think much about him so I think that means he’ll turn out to be great.

Who thought it was a good idea to give Bobby Hebert a seat at the talking head/analyst table. No one outside of cajun country can understand him, and I'm not interested in the analysis of a former QB who couldn't consistently engineer 14-17 OFFENSIVE points per game. How many times did the Dome Patrol put up more points than the Saints O?

I remember a SportsCenter clip back in the late 80s/early 90s with highlights of the Saints game. Can't remember the actual opponent, but let's say it was the 49ers....they showed highlights of the game, with resultant scores, and summed up the contest with the statement "49ers....24; Saints Defense...16; Saints Offense.....6" (The defense scored 2 TDs on forced TOs, and a safety; the offense scored 2 FGs)

Considering his offensive acumen, who cares what Bobby thinks? Should be asking the Dome Patrol! What does Rickey think?

If we land a starting QB in 4th round, he will certainly be a steal. Guessing what round a prospect would have gone, especially this year, is a crapshoot. Obviously the saints had him rated at this spot. Who is to say other teams didnt? In fact, i recall reading articles that leaked after the draft that other teams were interested in Book in this range

It clearly states: long (20+) and intermediate (10-19) passes.
Long are on the vertical axis, intermediate on the horizontal axis.
