Movies from when we were kids

so i'm trying to remember (and i'm old, so...)
if we didn't see movies at the theater, where was it?
i vaguely remember 'Saturday Matinee Movies' or some such
Elvira for the schlock horror at night
but where else?
For some reason, they showed The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit in school at an end-of-year assembly. And I remember first they called it "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" over the intercom and then corrected it later that day. I mean, I thought it was great and was probably one of the few actually watching the movie instead of goofing around but this was in middle school and not elementary school and I think it's a weird choice.

the only school related movie thing i can remember is when the whole school was bused to see Song of the South at the Municipal Auditorium (i was maybe in 3rd grade):covri:

My first ever movie at the theater was The Unidentified Flying Oddball... I guess my parents couldn't find a baby sitter that night, i was 6.

Funny enough, if anyone has ever played the board game Balderdash (the second version) where you are given an obscure movie title and you had to make up what you thought the plot was and make everyone think yours was right. Needless to say, this one came up and not only did i get the plot correct, everyone picked it because it was so out of the box crazy plot, that had to be it...

lol, love that game. Haven't played in a long time, though.

Thinking about it, Betamax vs VHS was a real thing, for a long time…. Like Ford vs Chevy, Walmart vs Target, Jeopardy vs Wheel .. i am firmly Team Jeopardy on that one, and always will be…. Crazy that none of those other ‘wars’ resulted in the complete obliteration of the loser.
I remember those days. Betamax was superior technology wise. Their problem was they were much more expensive than VHS. It was simply the market. Consumers wanted the cheaper price.

When I was in the 1st or 2nd grade, our class took a field trip to see The Fiendish Plot of Dr Fu Manchu…. I‘m not sure what the school was thinking; maybe becuase it was a Peter Sellers movie and he’d done the Pink Panther films, that it’d be good for kids(?) Spoiler alert: It was not…. Also, as i found out when i just looked it up, it was the last movie Peter Sellers ever made…. So I remember the movie being unwatchable, but even worse was that they took us to Shoney’s before the movie , and i had the worst hamburger i ever had in my life.. granted, i was an even pickier eater at age 6 or 7 than i am now, but i just remember that it was disgusting.

Plus, the porn industry picked VHS, i think that was the deciding factor.

The only reason I went to Shoneys was for the breakfast bar after a night of drinking :)

Interestingly, the Shoney’s we went to was on the south side of Veterans.. but in more recent years, ie the late 90s, Shoney’s was definitely on the north side of Vets, near Bonnabel.. were there more than one ? If so, does anyone remember where the one on the south side was, ie nearer to Clearview, or Causeway, or whatever ?
