How different is it from the regular BH?
They substitute the rye with brown rice in the mashbill. It is much smoother and has a sweeter flavor, IMO, but still a touch of spiciness. is only 80 proof, though; wish it could have been a little higher.
I typically like bourbons with a higher barley mixture.

Do you enjoy ryes? Bourbon rares exceeds 10%-12% barley, but the ryes can more than double that. Willet Rye is near 30% barley IIRC.

Did they leave any rye in the mash bill at all? Seems really out for Beam/Suntory to take all of the rye out of a version of Basil Hayden since it's kind of know for it's high rye content. Basil Hayden was the first time that I notice high rye in bourbon and I'm a big fan of high rye bourbons like Four Roses, but regular Basil Hayden isn't so much my thing anymore.

Glenfiddich is the first Single Malt Scotch I ever tried. I bought it when I was like 27 thinking that I needed to have a fully stocked bar and a solid single malt Scotch needed to be in it. I got the name from a Crash Test Dummies song and at the time it was like $40 per bottle. But, I didn't even try it until around 5 years ago and that's was when I realized I really liked Scotch. Before that, I only really drank bourbon and had only had well brand scotch at bars which was really nasty.

Anyway, Glenfiddich is a really nice Spey Side. IMO probably better than Macallan. Especially for the price. I tend to taste some citrus in it and there is another flavor that I can't quite place that I think makes it a bit different from stuff like Macallan, Abelour, Glenmorangie, etc.

But, I'm apparently moving to the more smoky and peaty stuff now.
I got my start with scotch on Glenfiddich and prefer it to the standard 12, 15, 18, and 21 year offerings from Glenlivet and Glenmorangie.

I've mostly moved on to more complex and peated scotches as well although I still will occasionally pick up a bottle of Glenfiddich 15

I ordered 2 bottles of Pure Scot Signature and 2 bottles of Pure Scot Virgin Oak from Touch of Modern. They are blended scotch put out by the Blandoch Distillery. I don't normally go after blends other than Compass Box and the bottle of Black Bull 30 Year I have had for like 8 years and never tasted lol

These whiskies normally go for better 40 and 50 a bottle but I got all four for $100 plus shipping

For $40 I would say pretty good. For $25, great!
The Signature is smooth with a big, full flavor. Malty and full of citrus and honey
The Virgin Oak has the sweetness muted and balances it with the woody bitterness of the virgin oak giving it some bourbon characteristics

I forgot to report.... cask strength is no joke. Wow. I found that I honestly like the Highland Park cask strength 1 better with a little water.

Oh, and today, I was getting wine for the wife, and happened to see 2 bottles of Buffalo Trace sitting there for $25. I grabbed one. Not bad for the price

So, for $25, yeah, Buffalo Trace is solid. But, I don't see it any different than Bullet Bourbon (which, of course is a bit more expensive). But, at least now I know, and it was cheap to find out. haha. But, anything that cheap you can drink neat, is a deal.

My always available to me go-to is Old Bardstown
Estate. BT is ok.

The strange thing is that 2 or 3 years ago you could get all the Buffalo Trace you wanted around New Orleans for $19.99 per bottle. I was an even bigger value for the price at that point, but now it's hard to even find a bottle on the shelves. Bulleit used to be the same price around here, but I haven't noticed the price recently. To me Bulleit is more of a mixer Bourbon, but it's definitely solid.

My bad, they are. Lol. Bullet was like $27 here.

Bulleit Rye > Bulleit Bourbon

BT has the fanbois. I see guys all the time swoop in and try to buy as much regular BT as the store will allow. Some stores in the metroplex have 1 per person bottle limits now. A lot just look for BT, Weller, ER, EHT, Blanton's and then move on to another store if they're out as if there is only one distillery in KY. Lol

Totally agree about Bulleit Rye. I know it's just standard MGP rye but I really like it more than other ryes I've had. Even more expensive stuff, but I haven't gotten up to Whistlepig yet.

I had heard that BT was impossible to get other places, but the phenomenon didn't hit New Orleans until recently. But, yeah, there is a lot of Bourbon to try from Kentucky and a lot that is better than BT. Not that BT is bad, but it's not top of the line like some seem to think it is.

I really want to try Whistlepig. That stuff looks so tempting, but the price makes my head hurt.

Do yourself the favor of buying any Boss Hog Samurai Warrior you ever come across. It's the best thing ever, but unfortunately it's rEEdiculous expensive.
