Lord of the Rings Series -- Amazon

And if we want to guarantee Amazon doesn’t ever take another big fantasy swing again, we should keep bleating about ‘fanfic’
There's nothing wrong with fanfic. But, we should we should acknowledge that's mostly what this is. I just sort of pretend this isn't Tolkien I'm watching and I'm fine watching it.

Welll.... the star of Earendil was a Silmarilian and put up by the Valar. So, that part is accurate.

Also, the fading of the Eldar was a very real thing. They would diminish amd fade is away from Valinor for too long. They cheated that a bit by making the 3 rings. So, that being a big concern of Gil-Galad is reasonable. Now... mithril? Eh..... interesting.

The Fading takes an unimaginably long time. Elves don't die, they become bodiless souls if they insist on lingering.
Even if we buy the idea it's "the light of Valinor" fading over time, it wouldn't effect Gil-Galad or the vast majority of elves in middle-earth, they never set foot in the Undying Lands.
Gil-Galad himself was born in Beleriand, not Valinor.
It's just a ridiculous, non-canon contrivance.

You can only directly contradict canon so many times before you're no longer doing an adaptation, you're doing fanfic or 'based on', 'inspired by' work.

Which isn't necessarily bad. Blade Runner bears little resemblance to the Philip K Dick story, yet it's a classic of the genre.

My point isn't to say that RoP shouldn't be enjoyed by those who like it. Go ahead, knock yourself out.

My goal is to show that you can have serious reservations and criticisms of the show without being a neckbearded, racist incel howling into the void from his mom's basement.

The vitriol people have by a fantasy tv show not following “the text” just goes to show me we’ll never be able to get over religious differences
South Park showed us that even if we get over religious differences we'd still fight amongst ourselves over some other reason.

Perfectly exemplified by religion in general declining and people making up new bullshirt to be tribal about and fight over. The problem is and always has been people, full stop.

I’ll finish out the season, but it’s really starting to lose my interest. Hopefully it actually goes somewhere with 3 left.
Much better. I was afraid we were going to enter Walking Dead territory where the payoff for a buildup never comes.

Only 1 episode left, and we got to see how Mordor was created. And I don't understand how mithril comes into play other than Frodo's chain mail.

The Elves need it to restore their tree, the that is dying and taking them with it.
