Revisiting Joe Burrow draft (2 Viewers)

Absolutely. Think Swimmer was the biggest one pushing for that iirc.

Back then I’d have said no but I would definitely go for it now, he’s a top notch QB. Elite.

Let's say Arch Manning has a historic college career. He sets passing records, wins the Heisman, wins the National Championship, and declares for the draft.

At the same time the Saints have a terrible season and now hold the #1 overall pick in the draft that Arch Manning is available in.

What would it take for YOU to trade that pick?

Speculating here....IF (and an big if) the Bengals were even taking phone calls to possibly trade that pick, how much draft capital was everyone comfortable with?

I think the price would have been higher than all of a team's draft picks that particular year, and might have been multiple high draft picks in ensuing years.

Is the value of a franchise QB so much that a club hamstrings itself to build a team around said franchise QB? We saw for years what an average or below average defense with a QB playing at a HOF level...yes, multiple average seasons around .500.

Regardless of who is playing under center, an NFL team has to have talent and good play at other positions for the team to consistently win. A HOF QB can mask a lot of weaknesses, but only to a certain extent.

Frankly, I don't think they were even entertaining any offers, and it's likely they made the price so high that no team was willing to even consider it.

So in 2020 there were two thoughts from this board. Some people wanted to do whatever it took to get Joe Burrow and some people said no he’s not worth it. but people don’t usually go and revisit draft so looking back now, if you had a chance to redo the 2020 draft would you do a Ricky Williams trade for Joe Burrow? For the record at the time, I was one that wanted to give up whatever it took to cinci to get that pick from them.
I legitimately don’t remember anyone saying, “No, he’s not worth it.” I remember people saying it wouldn’t happen, for various reasons.

Exactly. You think Burrow is an LSU hero, he's from Ohio. Cincinnati was in the perfect situation. No way they were giving up that pick. It was the easiest pick they ever had to make in the history of the franchise. It was a no brainer. Literally no thought necessary. Taking Chase the following the year the smartest pick they ever made. Now that pick took sheer genius to make. 9 out of 10 franchises are passing on an elite WR for a good guard.

I would take a ricky williams type haul plus it would have to include a known commodity veteran qb.

We only had 4 picks in that draft so we would have had to dip into our 2021 draft to do it. Surely we would all give up Peyton Turner from 2021, but I wouldn't want to have missed out on Werner and Adebo. Ruiz from the 2020 draft turned the corner this year and we wouldn't have him either.

That being said, all of those players from the 2020 and 2021 draft are worth it for Joe. In 2020 we drafted Ruiz, Baun, Trautman and Tommy Stevens. In 2021 we drafted Peyton Turner, Werner, Adebo, Ian Book, Landon Young and Kawaan Baker. Seeing what we actually did with those picks makes moving up for Joe an easy decision.
