Ian Rapoport: Sean may not have a team lined up. (1 Viewer)

Sounds like he played himself. However, he admitted in one of the interviews with Colin that getting a bad team kinda comes with the territory of being a new coach. Parcells only won rings with the Giants but he developed a reputation for stabilizing poor franchises.

How did he play himself? He hasn't lost anything. Now if he sits out this year and then the Chargers/Chiefs/Cowboys/Saints job doesn't open up and he's stuck picking between like Chicago, Washington and Texans (again) then yeah. He might have played himself.

Once the Chargers seemed to be off the table I took a look at the other options and didn't think any of them looked super attractive.

I guess Denver would be the best to win right now, especially if last year's version of Wilson was an abbreviation.

Houston gives the best opportunity to build something through the draft. But it's Houston. It's an airport layover for me in which I avoid driving at all costs.

Payton has four problems if he wants to coach in 2023 or 2024:

1. He wants to go to a good team. Good teams normally are not looking for a new coach. That narrows the field.

2. He wants a huge contract. Not every team is going to give him that contract. That narrows the field

3. He wants power in the organization over personnel decisions. Not every team is going to give him the authority he wants. That narrows the field.

4. The team he goes to will have to give the Saints draft compensation. Not every team is willing to give up much in draft compensation. That narrows the field.

In short, he wants a great job and situation. But a team willing to give Payton the power and money he wants, and give up draft compensation, is looking for a miracle-worker because it is a lousy team.

Yep. I've seen KC come up multiple times but it doesn't make sense from their perspective. Chargers don't either when you consider their owner won't pay Payton what he wants to be paid.

His dream job of a ready made winner, organizational control, and big payday doesn't exist. Probably never will.

Wrong. He had 3 years left on his contract when he "retired" and he now has 2 years left. Coach contracts are not like player contracts.
Coaches contract are governed by The NFL Constitution and arbitrated by guess who? Roger Goodell. His word is final. I linked this information on a prior thread. Unless they somehow get the case moved to a public trial.

Next year will probably be the usual suspects.

I never saw the Chargers as an option, even though they seem to check all his boxes except 1. Unfortunately, that 1 box is probably a major one for CSP....compensation....Chargers are notoriously "cheap" and seldom if ever spend big money on anything. CSP ain't "getting paid" to work for the Chargers, so the rest of the boxes are probably irrelevant.

AZ was interesting until they hired a GM with no history or ties to CSP whatsoever. Not even "2nd level" connections. That move probably cost them CSP if they even wanted him.

Panthers don't stand a chance. They're just in the mix to keep the "preferred destinations" motivated at the highest level. Imagine Panthers actually PAYING a ransom of draft picks....multiple 1sts, 2nds, and/or 3rds across 2 or more drafts; and then CSP proceeds to beat the Saints like a drum, year after year (like he does to the Falcons). Think it can't/won't happen? We usually split with the Panthers, even with CSP on OUR sideline. This year we got swept by a lame duck coach and an interim coach. What will happen when CSP is calling the shots for them? And we've got....DA?! That's the kind of move that gets you fired. Any other move can and probably WILL be debated.....but won't get you fired. Panthers are a mirage.

That leaves Denver, Houston, and a purported "mystery team" that SOUNDS like Dallas (or whatever team you may fear him coaching....nebulous by design...how convenient?!) Of those 2, both have new ownership and/or management groups....so his stated criteria for strong and stable front offiice cannot possibly be determined. Both franchises are "big market" teams with long and strong NFL/AFL histories (Houston had a team that moved to KC before Houston got the Oilers, who moved to Tennessee, and then got the Texans). Houston has to compete with Dallas and perhaps New Orleans for fandom market share. Who knows how CSP feels about that? Denver has no real fan competition in the region. So far, i'd say the jobs are a push....something needs to tip the scales.

How about these considerations? Denver has a championship-caliber defense and a franchise-caliber QB that they're tied to for at least 2-3 more seasons. CSP will need to "fix" that QB, and we certainly know his track record of coaching up QBs. I'm sure CSP is confident of his ability too. But WHAT IF DangerRuss is physically done? He's a scrambler/runner and may be reaching his EOL for "number of hits" absorbed before retirement. And that's a very real thing...WHAT IF? And he'll have to do this in a division where Pat Mahomes is likely starting to peak and will probably continue to dominate for another 5-10 years; and an upcoming QB in Herbert who is capable of the same dominance, with the proper coaching. Denver is probably better-equipped for a QUICK turnaround, but perhaps a lower ceiling and a perennial grind/slugfest for the AFCW title or wildcard. But that QUICK turnaround is partially predicated on this years and next years drafts NOT being "gutted" to acquire CSP from the Saints.

Houston isn't as well-stocked as Denver, but the cupboard isn't bare either. And they've a STOCKPILE of draft picks to replenish the talent, on rookie payscales. With the right coach, and the right eye for acquiring talent, they could be a potent team for YEARS to come. And they compete in the AFCS. The scariest team in that division is the Jags. And while TL16 appears to be blossoming, he isn't as anxiety-inducing as Pat Mahomes and/or Justin Herbert....at least not YET. CSP could probably take this team to a division title in his 1st year....he could certainly COMPETE for one! And let's be honest....the Texans could afford to pay a ransom of picks (let's say 2 1sts and 2nds in this years AND next year's drafts....I'm not commenting on CSPs worth or likelihood of happening....i'm commenting on "ability to pay") and still be in a strong position to rebuild their team, with the right guy picking talent.

So as I lay it out, read between the lines, and try to apply reason, I think the Texans are the best fit for CSP. Fortunately, it's also the best scenario for the Saints. But that's all predicated on MY logic and reason. Who knows what CSP's logic is? And let's be honest....not all of these major life decisions are made in a logical manner.

I'm a bit of the "burn down the forest" kinda guy. If the Saints can't get what the Saints want for CSP, no one else gets him either. Grab a seat buddy....in the studio, in your living room...doesn't matter. You're sitting down. For at least 2 more seasons. We'll see what type of commodity he is in year 3. Every year he's out, he's worth less to the Saints....I get it. But he's also worth less to other teams, and I think his devaluation will hurt HIM more than it will hurt the Saints. JMO.... And I'm fine if the Saints think that too!

I don't buy that teams don't want SP because of the draft picks. They knew what it would costs to get him when they were given permission to interview him.

I don't know, it feels like the Payton momentum is letting up a bit. Maybe he's overplayed his hand? Maybe his demands are too high, maybe teams are put off by his arrogance, maybe this is all just kabuki.

Don't get me wrong, he's one of the best head coaches of the past 15 years, and as a Bucs fan I simultaneously hated him and would love to have him. But as good as he is, it's yet to be shown he can be as consistently good without Brees (having a lock first round HOF QB never hurts), and the history of the NFL is littered with great coaches who were mediocrities on their second time at bat.

If he really wants to coach this year, he'll coach. But Payton's no longer the young, ambitious offensive genius out to prove how good he is, and he's starting to feel a little like the retread he is.

Will always love and appreciate me some CSP, but these are not unfair points.

Exactly how I felt too.
I don't watch the pregame shows much but the times I have seen him on there he seemed uncomfortable and was basically a 5th wheel. I doubt many non-saints fans tune in to see what he has to say.
When I saw him, he just stood next to the others and had very little to contribute. Sometimes the others would try to pull him into the conversation and he would give a short awkward response. He has zero tv presence
