Saints planned to interview Mike McCarthy; McCarthy didn’t garner enough interest from Saints and will take a year off (9 Viewers)

I'll always be in the camp that believes he left because he simply didn't want to coach anymore without an elite QB. Will Nix continue to develop? Time will tell.
I think there’s definitely something to that, but I also think one of his best jobs as HC was 2021 when he clawed out 9 wins with a team that had no real QB and putrid receivers.

I think Payton got too comfortable with the front office in New Orleans. I think comfort is kryptonite for competitive people.

They will? Didn’t Loomis say that he expects the hiring to be a long, thorough process?
I doubt it'll be faster than any other team since we have Glenn high on our list. It could take awhile before we can bring him in for an in person interview since they have a good shot at getting to the conference championship game.

The only reason the Cowboys won that many games under McCarthy is because of Dan Quinn and his defense. The offense has been terrible outside of a few games where they beat up on sub .500 teams. That’s supposed to be McCarthy’s calling card. That’s a red flag IMO.
You don't post three straight top-5 scoring seasons (two of which they ranked #1) simply beating up on bad opponents.

Some interesting comments from McCarthy when he took play calling over after the team parted ways with Kellen Moore:

I’ve been where Kellen’s been,” McCarthy said, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up, but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense. I think when you’re a coordinator, you know but you’re in charge of the offense. Being a head coach and being a play-caller, you’re a little more in tune with (everything).
“I don’t desire to be the No. 1 offense in the league. I want to be the No. 1 team in the league with the number of wins and a championship. And if we’ve got to give up some production and take care of the ball a little better to get that, then that’s what we’ll do because we have a really good defense.
I’ll take maximizing wins over trying to maximize offensive points.

He was hard nosed. His Defense is more acclimated to the NFL and running Qb's. I didn't think there was much there except the fact he didn't like Tua as a QB coming out. Tua didnt like his hard nosed style. He eventually leaned into Tua. He became a winning Coach. Miami fired him because of Tua feelings. He wanted to win. He didnt coddle players. I like those coaches. I am 45. I am kind of drawn to Bill Parcells, Bill Cowher, Bilicheck Coaches.
I understand the Offensive young minds are amazing. Kevin O Conell has got to thank Flores for that 14 win season. Mc Vay is the man. McDonald has not done much in Miami. Klint Kubiac second half offense was atrocious, Shane Stichen, who I respect as a Coach has really been disappointing. I see the success and demand of Demeco Ryans.
I am not a fan of Aaron Glenn for the same reason I didnt like Dennis Allen later on. Too much man coverage. Your back is to running QB's. Your blitzing scheme was atrocious. I got sick of pass interference penalties down the field due to Corners on a island. This is the same tendancy of Glenn.

Fair enough, but I do think the situation in Miami was quite a bit more than him not liking Tua coming out. Quite a bit.

McCarthy also wanted Dallas to sign Derrick Henry but Jones told him no. If there is one thing we know about Loomis, if his HC said "I want Derrick Henry", the Saints are for damn sure signing Derrick Henry.

Perhaps someone has already mentioned it, but you'd have to believe that the arse-whipping that we put on the 'pokes in week two has to resonate a bit with McCarthy. He saw what our roster could do when our starters were healthy. He might not feel that the cupboard is as barren as others do. Depth is obviously a big concern, but strategic 2nd/3rd wave FA signings and a good draft can alleviate a lot of that, and you'd have to believe that the entire organization is committed to getting to the bottom of our abnormal injury issues based upon the volume of specific comments on that issue in recent weeks.

Yeah, outside of Vrabel (now off the market) Mike is/was the most safe HC candidate on the market the minute Jerry let him walk... I fully expect our FO to go all out to get him... and if I were to place a bet.... It would be that he's our next head coach by wide odds margin.

I am kind of "Meh" on MM... I think he can make us competitive in the short term... I think he can figure out our QB room now - and down the road...

I am not sure he can be the long term future given how old he is and where he has already been... and I think if/when we hire him, we'll be looking for a new HC within 5 years... maybe sooner.

So there are reasons to like the hire, and reasons not to....

That's quite the powerful quote, to be sure. As another poster pointed out, he no doubt saw what the Saints were capable of pre-injury wave this season. But he'd have to be the one calling the shots completely in free agency and the draft for THIS roster to be competitive in the short term.

If you like high scoring offenses, he's your man. :9:
