Sneaux next week [Historic snowstorm in southeast Louisiana on January 21, 2025] (1 Viewer)

I think it really depends on low tonite and how long it remains. If 30, then shouldn't be that hard of a freeze and soon as temps hit 33 tomorrow, melt is on.If temps get to below 32 for a good while then ice is thicker and will take longer to melt.

Hopefully temps don't stay below 32 for more than 6 hrs or so overnight.
My phone app is saying low of 21 tonight. Temps below 32 from 630 pm Wed to 10 am Thurs. I agree with what
infoman said earlier. I believe it's going to be Thursday afternoon before the roads are safe.

Surface streets freeze and thaw differently than elevated roadways and overpasses. Haven’t been to Natchitoches in a few years, but I’d imagine you’ll have to deal with several.

If it were me and I didn’t HAVE to be there, I wouldn’t make the drive.

The cans were probably much colder than the ground so they'll show what really came down. The ground down there is probably warm enough to melt the snow quickly. I'd be worried that the melting snow will turn to ice.

I think that is what is going to happen. It's up to 33 degrees and the sun is out and melting some of the snow, especially in places where people walked. But it's going to freeze again tonight and I think the streets will be skating rinks until late afternoon.

The forecasts seem to vary but WDSU says it will hit 26 degrees at 7 p.m. and won't be above freezing until 8 a.m. tomorrow. That is for my area so probably a bit colder on the north shore?

I've gotten a few texts from the city of Biloxi this morning about accidents. They are still asking everyone
to avoid driving.

Apple Weather on my iPhone says Gretna temperatures will stay 28F and below for about 11 hours (~8 p.m. - ~7 a.m.) with an overnight low of 25F. Note that they missed high on last night's overnight low by several degrees.

Weather Underground for Gretna shows roughly the same thing, but a little more sustained and a lower low temp -- 29F and below for about 13 hours (~6 p.m. - ~7 a.m.) with an overnight low of 22F.

Shave off ~5 degrees F for Covington.

Seeing the same thing here. Our lawn, sidewalk, and the street out front have melted quite a bit from the "kids" trampling down the snow yesterday. Lawns where no one played still look like smooth, fluffy snow as of now.

In fact, I'm a little surprised how much has melted off the street already. There's a little creek of flowing runoff water alongside the curb (street drain is in front of our house). And the ruts from where vehicles have been driving are snow-free (and ice-free, for now).

Under the powdery snow is a slick sheet of solid ice. Almost busted my arse a few times.
Now ya tell me! 🤕

Hadn't taken a spill yet, and I've been outside taking photos twice so far this morning. But I'm almost crab-walking with a wide stance to maximize my chances of staying upright. Felt one foot-slip, but nothing too bad.

There definitely is solid ice under what's left of the powder, but right now that solid ice is kind of rough & craggy, if that makes sense (not ice-rink smooth). Tomorrow, I'm betting on a more serious ice risk than now, even for people on foot.

Sticking with what I wrote yesterday evening:

Thinking on this some more ... I'll lay my chips on Saturday, early afternoon (for all traces of snow to be gone). There's a lot of accumulation to clear out -- I can see some icy/snowy nooks and crannies lasting into the weekend. Saturday highs are supposed to be north of 65F 57F (Wed a.m. update), so that will certainly finish off the rest of it.
I hope you’re right, because I have never seen this dude so happy

Summer of ‘22 he was scheduled to be euthanized, and seemingly got bit by a heartworm mosquito during that time. The rescue I got him from saved him, and we just went through heartworm treatment a couple months ago.

From all that to playing in the snow, in Louisiana? I’m getting him every moment I can

Sorry, got lost in my feelings and hijacked your post a bit there

I went out last night to take out the garbage and almost did a faceplant into the snow. There was like a foot and a half of snow where I had to walk to get to the garbage.

The sun is strong. There's atmosphere temp and there's the temp that the ground actually is. Does that make sense?

Came into office for a bit- was quite surreal to drive I-12 and be the ONLY CAR for miles - exit to 190 and see that a plow had created a lane and a half ( 2 lanes ) and a 2 ft wall of snow on either side, in bright daylight.
