A major roadblock to the Saints coaching search could be Derek Carr (3 Viewers)

And what did acting on that perceived desperation for a QB get us??? A QB that many of us believed was no better than the options we already had under contract at a bargain price.

And I think we were wrong. Carr is a better QB than Winston, Dalton, or Taysom. Is he worth what we are going to have to pay him for the next two years? No, but he has significantly upgraded our QB position and got paid about right the first two years. That being said, I think it's time we move on from Carr and see what we have in Rattler so that we know if we need to draft a QB in 2026 or not. But, I also know that it would probably be a bad idea to cut him this year. My hope is that Rattler takes the starting job and Carr can either be an expensive backup or he agrees to lower his salary/cap hit to facilitate a trade to a team that wants him.

I wasn't desperate for it...I knew what the problem was and it wasn't qb

It was both.

But if we had not signed Carr, we might have taken a QB early last year which looks to have been a great QB class and we would be further along in getting the cap closer to normal.

Don’t forget, we didn’t have our own first, so we would have ended up drafting a guy like Will Levis, who doesn’t look very good at this stage.

I meant in the draft last year. We were in easy range to trade up for Penix, Nix, or McCarthy. Although, I'm not really a fan of Penix, he will probably be close the the QB Carr is but for a lot less money for 5 years.

But we also could have ended up with Malik Willis the year before that. In fact we should have taken him before Green Bay did as a lottery ticket.

Ah ok. We would have had to trade up for someone better then. We got the highest QB available to us with any pick in this draft.

Frankly, I think we have invested too little in the QB position for way too many years. We tried to go with reclamation project guys instead of drafting young QBs and hoping to strike gold. The list of late first round QBs that we could have taken that we didn't is depressing, i.e. Jackson, Love, and Hurts. There may be others that I'm missing but while I like Rattler, that's the kind of guy, or even higher ranked guys, that we should have been taking since like 2016.

And we have all realized by now that sometime it's not the QB that is the problem it's the circumstances. We had the perfect circumstances to develop a young QB with Brees and Payton, but Payton only really tried with Hill and Winston. We should have been taking more swings with better assets.

Well, you know they tried in 2017, but got beaten to the punch.

I do think we should have drafted Love in 2020 though. That was the desperation hour, but instead we decided to take a project interior lineman for Brees’ final year.

So Payton says, but if he was really that committed to Mahomes he should have moved up and he should have kept his mouth shut in front of Andy Reid and maybe he would not have traded in front of us for Mahomes. But, he we should have found another one to draft after that other than Ian Book.

Yep, not taking Love was really bad and the fact that we passed on him for an average at best, inconsistent OG, in the 1st round, makes it worse.

Oh it definitely happened. Even had Drew in the draft room that night to be part of the welcoming party.

We definitely were too brazen and open.

I'm not saying he would not have taken him, but he left a lot to chance by sitting. Especially after gushing about him to Reed. And what makes it worse is that he also traded up for Davenport when Mahomes is who he should have traded up for.

As far as Carr being a roadblock, I don’t really agree. I think having the a QB of his caliber as an option to a new head coach, that gives you a free swing at a young QB with his as your backup worst case. His contract really isn’ta problem if we’re keeping him, and things can be done if we need to cut him and just move on post June 1.

And then the year after that, took a DE who shares a name with him. But hey, took Ian Book in the 4th!

Diana Russini and Chase Daniel discussing the Saints job and Russini says (paraphrasing), that if Moore decides not to take the job its because of the QB sitution, but goes on to say that he has "come around" on the opportunity anyway.

Saints talk starts around 23:45

It's a good sign to me that Moore is out on Carr.

Agreed. I'd be really concerned about Moore is he didn't realize that we have a major issue at QB.

So, it's not surprising that Moore would have concerns about our QB situation. Although the interpretation of this I saw was it was "scuttlebutt" that Moore wasn't sure about the job because of the QB situation.

Anyway, I think we have all shared the same concern since Brees retired. Although I guess there are a few people who think Carr can be the solution, but to me he always felt like a bridge QB that you get until you can find a young QB. And even Carr's biggest supporters have to realize that he's going to be 34 when the season starts and only has 2 more years on this contract so he isn't a long term solution.

I do find this entire coaching cycle strange. With rare exception, Chicago and New England but only because they inexplicably didn't fire Eberflus last year and N.E. inexplicably hired Mayo, teams that have jobs open don't have good young QBs on the roster when they are looking for a new HC. Every other job either has an aging QB about to retire (Jets), a young but expensive and mediocre QB (Jax), or no real QB options (Saints and Raiders). But this year was strange because they were two jobs with potentially good young QBs which made it harder for teams like the Saints that don't have the QB position figured out.

So it's strange and a bit unlucky that our QB situation would be such an issue when most of the time that is what you get when a job comes open. If a team had a great QB situation, they probably wouldn't be looking for a new HC in the first place.

Hopefully Moore continues to see options to succeed and takes the job. And I do agree that it's a good sign that Moore isn't satisfied with Carr and presumably will be looking hard to fix the position.

Let's be honest.

Coaches want to go somewhere with a young, blue-chip quarterback on a rookie deal, not one with an uncertain future and no assurances that he'll be here beyond next season.

I'll put on my wishing hat and predict it will be Rizzi. Mccarthy goes to Chicago, Glenn to the Jets, Johnson to the Raiders, Brady stays in Buffalo another year.

Could be completely wrong.
You weren’t completely wrong and not completely right just somewhere in the middle.
