Opinion A major roadblock to the Saints coaching search could be Derek Carr (20 Viewers)

The Jags, Im giving Lawrence a year before throwing that out.

IMO, the Jets, Raiders and Saints are just about equal in QB situations. None of them are good or better than the other when you factor in everything. Sure, Carr is probably the better (less below average?) of the QBs from those 3 teams currently on their rosters. But he is also a very known, very average commodity that needs a crapton of help that he doesnt have here.

Loomis can say, the next HC will have a say in the QB situation.....but how much say can you have when even as a post june 1 cut, Carr would create 21 million in dead money?

What the Raiders have is, 97 million in cap space. The Jets 17 million and we are at -57 million. We are more than twice as far in the hole as the #31 team in salary cap space. Yes, people bit when Loomis said that we have more players under contract, but we are still -57 million in the hole with what the roster we had, that is old, injured and overall not all that talented.

Both teams draft ahead of us. Both have more cap space than we do. So the QB situation might not be better in LV or NY RIGHT NOW, they do seem to have more flexibility to change that.

Id say the QB situation is a wash between us NY and LV.
Yeah it’s certainly odd to bag on the Jets or Raiders in that regard.

The Jets took a swing at it all with an aging Rodgers and they lost that gamble.

In terms of the Raiders? That makes even less sense when people say “hurrr durrh, the Raiders QBs suck!!!!”

Yes. Yes they do.

They also don’t want Carr, let that one alone speaks volumes.

The Raiders are at least in position to change their fortune in that regard after moving on with Carr, it just didn’t work out for them last year with the musical chairs of the first round of the draft and something like 6 QBs going in the first with Bo Nix one pick ahead of them. Of course it could be argued they should have dropped Carr years ago and started drafting then.

As far as the Jags and Lawerence? I can see this going either way as in one could make the case that there are plenty of organizational problems with them. It might be that or it could be Lawrence or some combo of the two. Jury is still out.

i thought in your other thread, your opinion was that the job is so undesirable, because of the organization, no one would take it. Now Carr is the major roadblock? Well I guess he’s part of the organization, but as pointed out by others, the job may be more desirable than you think.

And I’ll say again that no assistant coach would pass up an opportunity to reach the absolute pinnacle of their profession. Not to mention, how many new coaches get hired to replace winning coaches on a contending team?

Just because we pay him,the next coach doesn’t need to play him. Yes, expensive backup insurance policy, but if the new coach identifies a rookie or trade for 2nd year QB, use rattler/haener as a bridge, he can go with that. Or cut him and deal with the cap with the above. Give him a year to build up using the draft. Nobody is expecting much the 1st year anyway, probably 2 years.
I can’t wait to quote this around mid season next year. :)

The bigger question is who believes that he’s going to be the QB in 2026?

The Saints could do a full jettison ala Denver with Wilson but that would likely be too painful given the state of the roster.

2026? (Likely) all bets are off. So this seems to be a question for 2025 only. Unless people believe a 11-year vet is suddenly going to start playing at a high level when he’s been average for most of his career?

You cant cut Lawrence next season. He's have a 88M dead cap hit. You are stuck with him until at least 2028.

Carr is SIGNIFICANTLY better than anyone on the Jets or raiders and its not even close. Yes they draft before us, but I don't think a QB is feasible for them, unless they want to hire Prime as HC or have him having significant influence over what that do. They may not even have that option. Titans, Browns, and Giants all pick before Jets or Raiders, and all 3 need a QB.

Look Im not arguing with that. Carr is likely here 1 more year at most. And none of those 3 teams are suddenly going to become contenders in 1 year. To me all 3 teams are rebuilding and playing for 26 and beyond. So yes, right now, Carr is the best qb on those 3 teams. But he is a bridge to whats next.

When you factor in where the teams are currently, the current QBs, and the cap space and draft picks - I just dont see any of the 3 teams being in a better situation at QB than the others. All 3 have their futures tied up into decisions and picks they havent made yet at the QB position.

But yes. Carr, as average as he might be, the best QB on those 3 teams by a pretty good bit. Does it matter though if all 3 teams are rebuilding for 26?

to a head coach not wanting to get bounced and be one and done if he goes 4-13 (Mayo) yes that matters.
