From all accounts, the offense looked great even w/ out Drew. Colston is back and Hamilton may be the power back we need. The defense secondary made plays and seems to be playing w/ confidence. Reis had a good day.

Now, have we spent to much time and emphasis on the secondary? It seems like the O ran the ball at will. You can have the best secondary in the world, if you can't stop the run, you won't stop the pass.

Any concerns?

jeffduncantp Simoneau (right elbow) is lone injury from scrimmage. Chip Vaughn has minor meniscus tear in knee. Further test, evals needed on both.
1st impressions from B&G: Defense good (pressure, TOs) & bad (run D); Hargrove, Reis shine; Brunell 8-for-9 on opening drive; Colston=beast

Hopefully this is just the sign of a defense getting used to a new scheme and nothing more..Last year, the D did well against the run and struggled against the pass. I don't remember how the defense did in the '06 preseason, but that year is a good example of how a new scheme can turn things around for a defense. I'm still seeing the glass as half full, because they probably need time to "gel".

one concern......we can't win the NFC South unless we can stop the run.

not necessarliy true, with our offense, we really dont need to be that stout in the run, our offense putting up the kind of points that they will, will force the oppenent's offense into pass mode, plus we may be porous between the 20's but i dont think that many teams will be able to run it down our throats for a touchdown in the red zone imo

I havent heard or read anything about a Jason David injury. I thought he was hurt. I hope not, I really think he can be an asset in the right scheme.

"With Darren Sharper on the sidelines, S Usama Young looked promising. He filled holes quickly against the run, immediately closed on a few screens – once coming in hot to put a loud pop on Thomas – and earned consistent praise from defensive backs coach Dennis Allen for his efforts. Young also made a quick play in coverage to stop Shockey well short of a first down, with the fiery tight end slamming the ball to the turf. " From NOS.com B&G article linked above.

Gotta like the sound of that. Good for UY, a year late, IMO, but rather late than never.

I agree with this totally. The 3 other teams in the NFC-S WILL run the ball down our throats if they can, and they will certainly begin the game trying.

Haven't we seen it enough the last 2 years? GREAT offense is not enough. Good to great defense is also needed. Not being able to stop the run does not constitute a good, much less a great, defense. Too early to push the panic button, but it will be a major concern if it continues.

I remember watching Reis in preseason last year and he had a nose for the ball (ala Sammy Knight.) I want to see this guy get his shot because from what I saw, he's better than people might think.
