N/S Ben Johnson (2 Viewers)

NFL Insider Josina Anderson reports the Panthers are expected to be interested in Lions OC Ben Johnson for head coach.

Frank Reich was recently fired as head coach of the Panthers, who are 1-10 after drafting QB Bryce Young first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson received head coaching interest from the Panthers last off-season, but had declined an interview and choose to stay in Detroit. Reich, who was hired by the Panthers instead, is now out after 11 games and the 37-year-old Johnson is expected to receive interest for the Panthers’ head coaching vacancy again.

The bigger question is “Why would Ben come here?”

Carr isn’t that enticing when 4-5 teams with top 5 draft picks will be looking for a HC.

I think most coaches are going to steer clear of the Panthers job for the foreseeable future.

Of course they are interested. He will have options, and the Panthers should be no one's first choice. The Saints job would be better by orders of magnitude.

Don't get your hopes up. There's 0.1% chance he comes here. Next year we're running it back with DA again, or if we're "lucky" he'll get the boot and we'll bring in someone who's already been a HC in the NFL, like a Lovie Smith. Not saying that's what I want, just trying to be realistic about what we're in store for.

Who are the teams we’re going to be competing with? That’s what we need to look at. Carolina has nothing. Just a meddling owner who didn't give his last coach one season and the hope that Bryce Young pans out. They don’t even have a 1st round pick this year.... or a second round pick next year. We have talent a coach can win with while he builds his team. If he gets a chance to go to the Chargers, sure. He'll take it. But for the most part teams looking for coaches aren't going to be the ones with franchise quarterbacks.

I can't imagine we would be at the top of his list with Derek Carr locked onto this roster.
He is only locked in with us for one more year, not to mention DC is much better than Goff was at the time he started working with him.

I think the Bears have 2 top 5 picks at the moment, Commanders, Chargers, Panthers, Patriots (maybe, there’s rumbling), Cards, Giants, possibly falcons. Most of those teams have top 5 picks.

Lots of options for Ben. I’d take the Bears job.

The problem they have is they have DJ Moore and pretty much nothing else on that team. Even with our guys aging out, we still have the better skeleton of a team and our ownership has the patience of Job (for better or worse).

There will be 5-7 head coaching jobs open. That is the prediction anyways by Schef.

Raiders, Chargers, Washington, Bears, Saints are all possibilities or for sure looking for a new HC and there are a couple other teams that are possibilities.

Bears will be an attractive job for most if not all coaches (currently hold the number 1 and number 4 picks), Chargers will be an attractive job for most or all coaches, and I think the Saints are a much more attractive job then some here believe.

Maybe Bears since they benefitted from the Panthers bad trade. I don't think the Patriots or Giants are opening up. And I'm not sure you want to take those teams in those divisions right now. I don't think you take the Commanders, Cardinals or Falcons over us.

The one case you could make for the bears is all of the picks. They have the Panthers 1st this year and 2nd next year. But yeah the team is bad and in the Lions division. You better hit on those picks.

Here I think a coach can win next year.
