Brandon Staley and Christian Parker interviewed for Defensive Coordinator, Doug Nussmeier interviewed for OC; all on Feb 16 (15 Viewers)

This is my fear as well. The Chargers defense was disastrous. Everyone clings to him being a good DC because he was DC for the Rams back in 2020 and they were one of the best defenses in the NFL at that time he was coordinator. But no one is contributing it to Aaron Donald. That guy single handedly dominated every game. You or I could've been play calling and ran a good defense with Donald at DT.

Everyone says he's just like DA, a better defensive coordinator then HC. But no one can answer to me why then the defensive play calling with the Chargers was so horrendous. The guy was always a step behind opposing offenses play calling. Not just in 2023, but in 2022 and 2021. I remember my thoughts whenever the Chiefs played the Chargers and it felt like the Chiefs offense considered the Chargers defense a bye week.

The simple fact that the niners wouldn't hire him as DC, but still found a defensive coaching position for him should speak volumes. They literally said "Na, you ain't going near that playbook".
I mention this about DA when he became HC and Todd Bowles their defense to a step back once they became head coaches and were calling plays. They were like 1 and 2 were versus the run. They were top 5 for several years as DCs. The year DA went to HC the run defense fell to 23 into total rushing yards allowed they were 4th. they allow 700 more yards on the ground and almost a whole 1 per carry. The Bucs were the same after Bowles they dropped from 3rd to 15 and gave up 500 more yards on the ground. What I saw with DA HC vs DA DC is that now he had worry about the whole team instead of just the D. During his DC days he was more in tune with the players because he was always with after every possession he was able to coach them. He couldn't do that with them as HC because he is watching now to see if I have to challenge this or call a timeout. Yes he had a better team on D with the Rams, but they struck out on guys they thought would but they defense over the hump like JC Jackson. He did nothing there. He went back to NE and still did nothing. I willing to give him a chance. Some coaches are meant to be assistance than head men just look at Spags, Greg Williams, Wade Phillips, Vic Fangio, Jim Schwartz and DA just to name some.

I saw something very different with DA. In 2021 when DA took over the team the defense was still good. Starting in 2022 we started letting front 7 talent go. Also the Dline scheme changed (Cam Jordan spoke on this). The evidence and the way things played out tells me DA thought he could operate a good defense based on coverage sacks. Losing Onyemata really, really put a giant hamper on our run defense. It basically no longer existed.

Now I can't say anything about Bowles. But Staley was very different then DA. Staley incorrectly schemed and play called. His defense was always one step behind offenses. I didn't see that with DA. I saw a terrible philosophy of focus only on making the secondary better to the sacrifice of front 7. That wasn't Staley's problem. His entire defense sucked at every level from start to finish because his scheme was over complicated and the play calling was always one step behind offensive play calling. Herbert and Ekeler were his saving grace, keeping clock possession as much as possible. But theres only so much an offense could do to protect the defense. If the offense had failed often we might've seen one of the worst defenses statistically in the history of the NFL. Yes. It was that bad.

DA took over as HC in 2022 that's where the decline happen in 2021 run defense was 4th in 2022 down to 23. Onyematata left in 2023 when Ryan Nielsen left because DA didn't name him DC and he left to the Falcons. That's where the change came in. DA overall the defensive coaching staff in 2023 and hired Grantham. All the players loved Nielsen and said he was the best Dline coach they had after all the Bill Johnson years.

It will be a long time from now before Stanley gets his chance to be recycled as a HC.
Parker is a up and coming coach. If he is the Saints DC & he turn our D around he will be on every teams HC Short List when there is an opening...

I like Stanley because I think he is going to be like Spagnuolo with KC and Fangio with Philly.

As DSnfla said it would be great to bring Parker in as an Asst. HC but we will still lose in in a year or so as a DC to another team.
His stock is very much on the up...

Would love to get Parker in the building regardless but I don’t see the Eagles/Fangio letting him go for what is too close to a lateral move.

And I just don’t think you pass on a well regarded up and coming coach because of the possibility that he might be SO good that you could lose him in a year.

Just like I don’t think you hire a mediocre coach because they’ll most likely not ever be coveted by other teams.

If Staley is the pick I hope to god it’s because he has the best plan for this team and Moore saw something in him when they worked together that makes him truly believe he’s the best person for the job.

But man, if it’s between the two of them I hope it’s Parker.

When Staley took over the Rams D they were #17 the yr before. in 1 yr he had them #1
Yes Donald was a dominate player but their D was not loaded , all they had was him, Ramsey and Floyd

The 9ers promoted Sorenson to DC before they hired Staley so it's not like they chose him over Staley. So I think that " You ain't going need the playbook " comment is a bit off

So 1 question I'm having is about Rick Dennison the guy who was senior offensive ast/ run game coordinator. He was given permission to talk to the Seahawks but that was a bit ago. He's still listed on our coaching roster. I'm wondering if CKM is going to keep him on?

Hmm, feeling like this snails pace search is reminiscent of Mickey Loomis. I hope KM has say so in who he hires. Sean would’ve had everyone and the ball boy hired by now.
Not these days they have to interview 2 minority hires outside the team for DC, HC, and 1 for QB coach now. So if his guys are Nuss and Staley he couldn't hire them until all the criteria was meet. Then they have to make everything look legit. You don't want to go directly to hire your guys and make the interview process look like a shame after meeting the standard. You should here something today or tomorrow. I they satisficed the Rooney Rule on Saturday I told my brother we should here something mid week.
