I mention this about DA when he became HC and Todd Bowles their defense to a step back once they became head coaches and were calling plays. They were like 1 and 2 were versus the run. They were top 5 for several years as DCs. The year DA went to HC the run defense fell to 23 into total rushing yards allowed they were 4th. they allow 700 more yards on the ground and almost a whole 1 per carry. The Bucs were the same after Bowles they dropped from 3rd to 15 and gave up 500 more yards on the ground. What I saw with DA HC vs DA DC is that now he had worry about the whole team instead of just the D. During his DC days he was more in tune with the players because he was always with after every possession he was able to coach them. He couldn't do that with them as HC because he is watching now to see if I have to challenge this or call a timeout. Yes he had a better team on D with the Rams, but they struck out on guys they thought would but they defense over the hump like JC Jackson. He did nothing there. He went back to NE and still did nothing. I willing to give him a chance. Some coaches are meant to be assistance than head men just look at Spags, Greg Williams, Wade Phillips, Vic Fangio, Jim Schwartz and DA just to name some. This is my fear as well. The Chargers defense was disastrous. Everyone clings to him being a good DC because he was DC for the Rams back in 2020 and they were one of the best defenses in the NFL at that time he was coordinator. But no one is contributing it to Aaron Donald. That guy single handedly dominated every game. You or I could've been play calling and ran a good defense with Donald at DT.
Everyone says he's just like DA, a better defensive coordinator then HC. But no one can answer to me why then the defensive play calling with the Chargers was so horrendous. The guy was always a step behind opposing offenses play calling. Not just in 2023, but in 2022 and 2021. I remember my thoughts whenever the Chiefs played the Chargers and it felt like the Chiefs offense considered the Chargers defense a bye week.
The simple fact that the niners wouldn't hire him as DC, but still found a defensive coaching position for him should speak volumes. They literally said "Na, you ain't going near that playbook".
