Brandon Staley is Defensive Coordinator

The Saints finally catch a break this draft is loaded with 3-4 DEs and rush LBs.

On paper your D doesn’t look too bad. But Young is all but gone. He was drawing interest before the increase in the cap was released. Now he’ll get $$$ on the open market. And Cam…..love the guy but it wouldn’t be shocking if he were released.
I think Young will be back. He’s a young pass rusher that we need. He will get probably around 12-13 million a year on a 3-4 year deal, which we can easily do while lowering his current cap number. Cam I believe takes a paycut to stick around.
Tanoh I think is a FA and not sure Shepherd worth keeping around. May be an opportunity to upgrade.
Tanoh is a FA, but he won’t be anything more than a minimum contract signing. Shepard wouldn’t save much by releasing him this year, might as well keep him around for another season as depth imo.
Saunders looks more like a NT than he plays like a NT.

I think we need an upgrade at that spot.
Saunders can take up a double team, that’s all we need from him. Sure that spot can use an upgrade, but so can alot of spots that we cannot upgrade all in one offseason. We also have Ridgeway who looks to be a natural NT and is young and could be that guy, along with Boyd who would both be backups or even starters if they outplay Saunders.

NT Options in the draft:

NT/DT Kenneth Grant, 6'3" 342lbs - Michigan (Freak show)
NT/DT Alfred Collins, 6'5" 320lbs+ - Texas
NT/DT Yahya Black, 6'5" 337lbs - Iowa (This is the guy why Higgins can run wild and make plays, he eats double teams)
NT/DT Cam Jackson, 6'6" 339lbs - Florida (draft reports says weakness is holding double teams)

NT Options on the roster:
NT/DT John Ridgeway, 6'5" ~330lbs
- Needs to continue development, but he's on the roster and can at the very least be the backup to NT.

Put me in the group that sees Deone Walker as a DE opposite Bresee in a 3-4.

LDE Walker/NT (Grant/Collins or Black)/RDE Bresee

Do you think Graham fits in the 1 1/2 gap scheme as a DE?

That guy is talented enough to play any of the positions in that formation, but to get the best/most out of him, DE in a 3-4 is probably best.

I really want one of these monsters to play NT and then a couple 6'5"-6'7" 300lbs+ guys at both LDE and RDE. Build the Wall!

12-13MM, yeah we could swing that. I have a feeling he's gonna approach 17MM which would price us out.

Not my first choice but he could be a solid choice. What I like best about him is that he has experience coaching D Line, Linebackers and Secondary as a position coach at different levels. What I like least about him is his tendency to move from team to team every year or two. That looks terrible on a resume. But I'm hardcore rooting for the guy to succeed and curious to see how he uses our 4-3 personnel when he's been primarily a 3-4 coach.

This is a solid list. Ignore the comments. I was super disappointed to read about Black's character concern. It's gotta be draft talk. The guy is well known (supposedly) in Iowa as a nice guy and a team leader. It's also a very polar opposite report to this article how great he stood out at the senior bowl: https://www.si.com/college/iowa/foo...ing-a-name-for-himself-at-reeses-senior-bowl-

Sometimes I'm really confused about these scouts. How the heck am I on this dang forum doing a better job then them prior to the senior bowl on who's who. I've gotta assume the reporter was just being dramatic when they said no one knew who Black was. Cause that can't be right. Anyone who has watched Iowa for just one single defensive series would've had Black and Higgins stand out to them. Or Dart for that matter possibly being the best QB in this draft.

This scheme could really help Kool-Aid. Apparently, Saban's defense at Alabama was a Cover 3 hybrid zone/man where their DBs played zone, but then transitioned to man coverage once the receiver made a move. Kool-Aid obviously excelled in that defense in college and playing the pattern match/matchup zone that Staley uses should help Kool-Aid play better in a more familiar scheme.
