This was the main argument I made in the many Discord groups I'm a member of. This is just laziness on DC's part. They won't take the time to create and develop new characters to become more diverse in the universe. Hell, you have hardly heard from the likes of Batwoman (Kate Kane), Midniter & Apollo, and Harper Row, characters created with their identity already established and unquestioned. Why won't DC take the time to grow these characters? Marvel does a great job with this with characters like America Chavez. It took time, but she has caught on with readership. My opinion on these things is does it really serve the story? These things are always done in poor taste if its just for representation purposes. You've now made a distinction of a characteristic of a character, I.E sexual identity. If this serves no purpose other than, "oh, by the way, he's bi, gay or etc, its very poor writing. Now, in these types of stories, are we exploring issues that Bi sexual people face? In this universe where this is somehow relevant? Is it being done to educate that people with this sexual identity exist and it can even encompass superheroes like Superman? Does it overtake his identity of becoming Superman as the issues go on?
These things in western media aren't done very well, its mostly cheap pandering without being remotely creative at all. While this is the son of Clark kent, its still being sold as superman. I would rather see more unique stories that feature new characters rather than just lazy slapping a "Oh hey look, superman is x now"
Cheap pandering, poor writing, is the reason western comics will never eclipse Japanese Manga. Characters being bi or gay in Japanese manga have been a thing for decades but the main difference is, those characters are usually way better developed and the books are at least entertaining and have unique and creative stories.
What DC is doing is nothing more than a cheap money-grab, especially considering the issue is still almost a month away (Nov. 9). As upset as I am about Jon Kent (and what they destroyed with he and Damian Wayne in Super Sons), I'm really pissed about Tim Drake, and I'm not even a huge fan of the character. But I am a believer in history and continuity. And it pisses me off that they are ok with destroying decades of a romantic history between he and Stephanie Brown to pull this publicity stunt.
And make no mistake, both Tim and Jon are gay. DC is not going to have them switching relationships between the sexes. Slapping the "bi" tag on them is their way out if/when this fails. It's the same crap they pulled with Catwoman years ago. It sucked then and they switched her back without a mention of being bi ever coming up since.
But she and Batman still can't be married...
Just dumb and cheap.
I'll get off of my now.
