Comic Con Talk (Renamed since LA Comic Con can't get it together) (6 Viewers)

All of you gonna miss my show. You blow. :tears:

wait, huh? explain again plz

So when do they have you scheduled?

Ok, the final schedule is live...

I've developed this half baked theory that there's a weird thing going on in the con economy now when it comes to guests. The biggest cons are getting bigger and bigger and bringing in more and bigger names as guests, which is both keeping them busier and elevating their asking price. As a result, mid to smaller size cons are increasingly unable to compete for those guests financially and are getting left behind.

Look at Pensacon, for example. It was a midsized con with a solid growth trajectory for several years, but look at this dire arse lineup of headliners they've announced so far for a show that's in a month:

People have even commented on some of their social media posts about what a bunch of nobodies they've got this year.

Then you have Louisiana Comic Con which is in a about two months. I don't want to dogpile on them, especially since one of their representatives has posted here before. I want them to do well. But they were once another solid midsized con with a growth trajectory and now look at their guest list this year:

I mean....I know that not every con is big enough to bring in A listers like Fan Expo or Reed Pop shows, but it really does seem like the guest lists for these mid to smaller sized cons have absolutely cratered in the last couple of years.

Yep. We talked about noticing this way back in the thread (which is why we ended up changing the title). I'm still going to Louisiana Comic Con in March, but mostly for the merch. Will need to get the Blue Ranger's auto to add to the collection, though.

I used to be like you... Go for merch... go for one person. Not anymore. I can find most merch online far cheaper than con rates, including some comics.

I've never been to one of these things. Was considering taking my 9 year old on sunday in NOLA. What can i expect at these type of things? Would my son have fun? I should say, i doubt my son cares or even knows who any of the celebrities are. i was thinking it could be fun seeing people dressed up and all the random stuff there. Not sure if that makes it worth the entry price.

I still like going for merch because there's always going to be at least a couple of booths selling something interesting I probably wouldn't otherwise think about purchasing but end up really wanting when I see in person.

I've also gotten lucky with some bulk discounts on old comics and magazines at the last few cons I've gone to. I just prefer digging through long boxes and haggling. It's part of the collecting experience for me. Like I found someone willing to give me tons of old pristine issues of Dragon magazine from the 80s for $5 a pop. Those same issues were going for 2-4x those prices online.

You have to hunt though.

It really depends. If he's not interested in the guests, is he a collector of anything? There's a massive vendor area with lots of merchandise, collectibles, hand crafted stuff, art, etc. If he's into anything remotely nerdy he will find plenty of stuff to look at or buy. Con prices can be rough, though.

If you don't think he would be interested in the guests, that cuts out panels or signings as possible draws. There will be lots of cosplay. I'd say for a Sunday price spending some time in the main hall, taking pics, seeing all the vendors and their wears would maybe be worth it. But it really depends on how into comixs/anime/video games/sci-fi and fantasy he is.
