My wife just got back from making a deposit at Hancock Whitney here in Lafayette. Said the traffic was back to pre-pandemic levels. She was very frustrated (to put it mildly) when she returned. At the bank they had an employee outside to facilitate moving the drive through process in quicker fashion. Good idea. Except that the employee was going right up to each vehicle (no mask) and exchanging a pen and materials with customers. She was tending to those that just had deposits to make. She'd walk the materials into the bank and come back with a receipt. My wife opened a very narrow gap in the window when she was approached. While handing the checks to deposit, my wife asked if she should be wearing a mask. Her reply as she tapped her pocket (indicating she had one) was "On Monday we'll be required to wear one" and walked away to make the transaction.

My wife had to fight the urge to go full-blown Karen on HW Bank. But the day ain't over yet.

Many stories out there like that.

Yesterday, I had someone on my FB feed trying to justify not wearing a mask because the person that helped them in the McDonald's drive thru that morning didn't have one, so it must be pointless now.

Masks are only effective if the single use ones are disinfected after use or thrown away. Cloth ones are only effective if they are washed every day. If you remove your mask and jam it in your pocket (where you hand has been) it must be disinfected.
I see people pulling out of their pocket or purse some nasty mask and thinking it's fine. If you are not following useage guidelines with regard to the type of mask you have then you might was well might have not been wearing one.
So just because someone has a mask on dont assume anything. Just saying.

If you are infected and you breathe into your mask, the mask is contaminated. BUT, the point of the mask is to keep the virus that you have from being spread in droplets as you speak, cough, or sneeze. The intent of mask wearing is NOT to protect YOU from getting the virus, it is to reduce the risk of me from getting it from you.

Neither (more than 'just the ones that are sick' but not everyone).

Test capability varies by locality but generally speaking, at this point, they are testing:
- People who show up with symptoms;
- People through contact tracing associated with positive cases;
- People in sensitive positions like health-care workers and government leaders;
- People who get a doctor's referral for whatever reason;
- People who show up at test sites (drive-through) and wait in line to get tested.

The scope of testing has expanded substantially in the last two weeks, and will continue to expand. In many locations, if you want a test, you can get it.

Are they saying that people that are not sick need to be tested? If so what is the purpose of this? I have no desire to be tested if I am not sick.

If you are infected and walk around touching everything in sight then a mask is the least of your worries.

What about asymptomatic carriers? They are the most important people to identify. An asymptomatic carrier unknowingly infecting many people, can cause a superspreader situation that would be difficult to trace.

But every breath, word, yawn, sneeze, and cough is spreading droplets that can hang in the air for long periods of time. This is especially bad for an asymptomatic carrier, who has no idea that they are spreading the virus while not wearing a mask.

The test as done right now is quite invasive. I think it may be a tough sell to tell people they have to get a test done if they aren't exhibiting any symptoms at all.

And that's not entirely accurate. Blunting the distance the virus travels from a sneeze or a cough makes a big difference. Six feet isn't far enough away if you're in the trajectory of a sneeze. The mask reduces that distance to probably a foot or less. That's a big difference. Masks has it's limitations, but can be effective with safe distancing and good sanitation practices.

The point is that you can be sick and not know it and not have symptoms. You can then unknowingly be running around spreading the virus. So we need to test everyone often to avoid spreading the virus.

This is EXACTLY my thought process. If the cook in a food truck has a respiratory infection, and he serves 100-200 people per day, just imagine 15% of those people get the infection; that's 15-30 people. But chances are it would be A LOT of people infected.

And I am not a virologist but if the truck is relatively small and the cook has it, the viral load in that truck would seem to be high.

Mine too.. Being a close quarter and enclosed environment with warm temperatures inside.. Yup. Virus hot spot.

and none of them are wearing masks... Believe me... I just left a taco truck... i know, i know..

You've pretty much so just described the kitchen of every restaurant except for some higher end places. Except in the average restaurant there are far more people working in the kitchen in an only slightly bigger space than a taco truck.

Seriously? A few seconds of discomfort from a swab in your nose is too much to ask? It's not like you have to give up the tip of a finger or have a days long recovery from a qtip stuck in your nose. Really uncomfortable to slight bit of temporary pain, maybe. If an adult can't endure that to help their fellow man, then they have some severe issues.
