N/S Cowboys officially hire Brian Schottenheimer as Head Coach (8 Viewers)

People are throwing around the word “nepotism” on this thread, and I don't get it. Marty Schottenheimer is long out of coaching and has no connection to the Cowboys. And Brian Schottenheimer has coached in the league for a long time. I don't like his offense and wouldn't want him as my HC. But it's not like he hasn't earned his stripes.

It's the new buzzword.

Organizations do the important process of succession planning and somebody is going to call it Nepotism.

I don't buy into that at all. Sean Payton wasn't just a successful OC. He was ready-made to be a Head Coach mentored by Bill Parcells. He sent Donte Stallworth packing and tossed Wayne Gandy's recliner in the garbage. He wasn't just drawing up cute plays. He immediately set a whole new culture.

Kellen Moore has a lot to prove in that regard. Sure, he'll need an opportunity. But I'm not ready to equate him with Payton at all.
I couldn’t tell you much about Kellen’s personality and I couldn’t have told you much about Payton’s before he was hired.

The correlation is both are QBs who didn’t make it in the NFL because they were undersized, both were OCs who had their head coach throw them under the bus, and both are creative play callers

Jones didn't give him a new deal; that can be spun either way. I can easily say his performance didn't justify paying him more money or a longer deal.
His performance didn't what now?

2 of the last 4 years the Cowboys were 1st in scoring, 1 year they were 4th in scoring and not until this year when Dak played only 8 out of 17 games did they sink down to 21st.

Then add in that the first year with Zimmer as DC they were 31st in points against after being no worse than 7th the prior 3 years.

Jones is an idiot. I'm not saying we should hire MM, but we could do worse and Jones is an idiot.

I'm sure glad "nepotism" wasn't in play when Sean Payton was hired. I bet Jerrah wished he'd have found a way to block Sean leaving as he was pining to get him back for many years.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but people don't like nepotism unless it's benefiting them.

…and both look like first cousins of Frankie Muniz.

People throw around the word “nepotism” (in this case) for good reason. It was as big a joke for the Lakers to draft Bronny James as it was for the Pats to hire Bill Belichick’s mullet headed kid. Those guys are getting jobs that are very limited in supply while a person that has a 1000x more talent can’t even get their foot in the door. It’s a crap deal, unless you are the one benefiting from it.

This isn’t the same as an owner passing the family owned team down to their heirs, this is a parent getting their kid ahead even though the kid is in over his skis.

Anyway, good luck to the Cowboys with this hire. I’m sure it will pan out gloriously.

I have no problem with Kellen Moore. He isn’t necessarily my first choice, but how comical is it that the Cowboys moved on from Moore, while Quinn moved on from the Cowboys, and now one of those men will be headed to the Super Bowl.

That Cowboys staff was amazing, yet they never accomplished anything with it.

Comparing Bronny with Brian Schottenheimer who’s been coaching in the NFL and in college for nearly 30 years is absurd. Come on.

Schottenheimer has a pretty good career of success. I would honestly say this past year as OC for the Cowboys was probably his worst year yet, and it still wasn't bad. The biggest problem was the run blocking. Dowdle just had a wall of defenders in front of him every time he got the ball in his hands. I never understood that. That Oline is a pretty good Oline but they got absolutely bullied in the run game for some reason. The talent they had, it really shouldn't have happened. I can't quite put my finger on it, but my gut feeling tells me the blocking scheme was highly suspect.

If Prescott hadn't gotten injured the Cowboys had a good shot at the playoffs.

I think he'll do good in Dallas. I'm curious to see if they progress, regress or stay about the same following McCarthy's departure.
